PhDTalks | Metamaterials and topological mechanics for elastic wave control

January 23 @ 17:15 - 18:30

Our next PhDTalks Seminar will be held on Tuesday 23rd january in Fassò Room (Building 4A), from 5:15 pm to 6:30 pm CET

PhDTalks is a series of seminars and discussions between PhD students. The events are aimed at providing a place to network and get in contact with many of the projects developed in our department.

Speaker Luca Iorio will talk about “Metamaterials and topological mechanics for elastic wave control”

At the end of each event a small refreshment funded by the department will be available.

You can watch the event online by clicking here.

Abstract

Metamaterials and architected materials are engineered materials with static and dynamic properties beyond (“meta”) those of their individual ingredients. Their role in elastic and acoustic wave manipulation and stress localization has been shown in the last years, yielding novel results for signal amplification, energy harvesting and mode conversion. In this talk, the main results of our research group in the field of elastic wave control through localization, mode conversion and energy harvesting will be presented. The various techniques used to achieve these kinds of extreme manipulations will be shown. The presentation will conclude on novel and intriguing energy localization phenomena observed in topologically polarized soft structural lattices.

Speaker’s bio

Luca Iorio is a PhD candidate in structural, seismic and geotechnical engineering (37th cycle) at Politecnico di Milano. Luca has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in materials and nanotechnology engineering. He is currently working on metamaterials for energy harvesting for the European 2020 project Metaveh and more specifically on the study and development of metamaterials for elastic energy localization, mode conversion and topological mechanics.
