Hydrogeological Risk Mitigation

Research activities

Analyzes, evaluates and innovates the methods and processes of water use and develops the engineering of the control and management systems for these processes. Examples:

  • forecast and control of polluting loads , which assesses their impact on natural and artificial hydraulic networks, on surface and underground water bodies and on land; and includes both the study of transport by the liquid phase, and the transport of sediments;
  • real-time planning, design and control of network water services – sewage systems, drainage systems and urban aqueducts – which includes both experimental activities in the field, and mathematical modeling, especially in the stochastic environment, for the purposes of ordinary management of water systems and to support decisions in the emergency phase linked to situations of water scarcity;
  • sustainable development of water systems, with particular attention to the strategies for the control and sustainable management of water in smart cities, the evaluation of the water footprint and the virtual water flows of transnational water trade, medium and long range scenarios for water supply and water security in different geographical contexts;
  • engineering of dams and river barriers, for the prediction of the hydrological safety of the works, of the riparian zones and of the cities of the valley, for the identification of related emergencies the obsolescence of these systems also due to the historical evolution of the valley territory, and for the evaluation of the economic, ecological and social effects of river barriers, both nationally and internationally;
  • sustainable project of hydraulic infrastructures , with attention to the environmental, landscape and functional insertion of hydraulic constructions, both in the context of new settlements, large infrastructures and the urban landscape, and within the framework of the functional recovery and restoration of historic works, such as Navigli, Navili, irrigation ditches, terraces and fountains.
