Characterization of calcite dissolution rate from in-situ and real-time AFM imaging in a statistical framework

11 February 2021 @ 12:15 - 13:00

The topic of the seminar is the stochastic characterization of micro-scale calcite dissolution rate maps, obtained by means of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) imaging of crystal topography.
In particular, we will discuss the principal methods to evaluate the dissolution reaction kinetics, together with their limitations, and how to overcome them in a stochastic framework. We will describe the results of the application of an interpretative model to the sample frequency distribution of rates and how we obtained a quantitative relation between the model results and the main mechanisms driving the dissolution process.
