Multiscale Analysis of Hydrogeological Process in a Multilayer Aquifer System

On Wednesday, October 22, a seminar entitled “Multiscale Analysis of Hydrogeological Processes in a Multilayer Aquifer System” will be held in the Grandori classroom (Building 4) at 10:15 a.m.
The seminar will be given by Prof. Leonardo David Donado from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
Abstract
The multiscale analysis of hydrogeological processes in a multilayer aquifer system seeks to understand the dynamic interactions between geological heterogeneity and groundwater flow across different spatial and temporal scales. Such systems consist of alternating permeable and semipermeable layers that control the exchange of water, solutes, and energy between confined and unconfined zones. By integrating geological, hydrogeochemical, and geophysical data, the approach provides a coherent framework for identifying recharge and discharge mechanisms, hydraulic connectivity, and the aquifer system’s response to natural and anthropogenic stressors.
At a methodological level, the study combines conceptual and numerical modeling to capture the variability and uncertainty inherent to subsurface processes. This multiscale integration—from pore-scale mechanisms to regional groundwater flow—enables the evaluation of key parameters such as transmissivity, storage, and vertical leakage, and supports predictive analyses under scenarios of climate variability or resource exploitation. The results contribute to a better understanding of groundwater dynamics, improving the design of monitoring networks and management strategies for sustainable use of complex aquifer systems.
Speaker’s bio
Leonardo David Donado is a Full Professor at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Faculty of Engineering, where he leads the HYDS Research Group (Environment + Water + Energy + Society). His work focuses on groundwater-surface water interactions, hydrogeological modeling, and integrating geosciences, data science, and environmental management for sustainable water and energy systems. He has directed large-scale national projects funded by MinCiencias and the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH). He has collaborated internationally with institutions such as ETH Zürich, Politecnico di Milano, and Université de Rennes. Professor Donado has extensive experience in teaching, research, and innovation, with a strong record in training graduate students, coordinating accredited academic programs, and contributing to Colombia’s energy transition and water governance strategies. Nowadays is an Adjunct Professor at DICA Polimilano.
