Structural, Seismic and Geotechnical Engineering

Program

Structural, Seismic, and Geotechnical Engineering (SSGE) encompasses disciplines and techniques deeply rooted in Civil Engineering, but also with significant industrial applications, enabling the understanding, modeling, and control of the behavior of structural materials, biomaterials, metamaterials, soils, structures, microsystems, and the interaction between the external environment and constructions. It is a highly interdisciplinary field that requires advanced analytical methods and sophisticated computational mechanics tools. The theoretical and applied study of materials and structures goes hand in hand with the analysis of interactions between structures and the environment, arising from both natural and anthropogenic activities. Due to their general applicability in structural and material modeling, the methods developed within SSGE are also highly useful in other technical-scientific areas whenever it is necessary to understand and control mechanical aspects to ensure design reliability, structural safety, functionality, and long-term durability.

Career Opportunities

The high-level training offered by the PhD program in Structural, Seismic, and Geotechnical Engineering enables doctoral students to pursue their careers along three pathways: (a) within academia; (b) within other public or private research institutes or companies focused on research and development; (c) professional activities (typically as independent consultants or high-level professionals, primarily as structural analysts or in advanced structural design and monitoring—Civil and Environmental Engineering and Industrial Engineering).
The interdisciplinary approach of the PhD program allows students to leverage the experience gained during their studies across various fields: from the design of large infrastructures to the conservation and restoration of monumental and architectural heritage, from seismic design to slope stability, while also addressing numerous issues common to different branches of Industrial Engineering (mechanical, aerospace, nuclear, and bioengineering).

Eligible Candidates and Scholarships

Both Italian and international citizens are eligible to apply. Applicants must hold a degree in accordance with the previous regulations D.M. 3.11.1999 n. 509, a Master’s degree under D.M. 3.11.1999 n. 509, or a Master of Science under D.M. 22.10.2004 n. 270, or an equivalent academic qualification obtained abroad, comparable in duration and content to the Italian degree, with a total university study duration of at least five years.
Certified knowledge of the English language is a requirement for admission. Please refer to the PhD School website for details.
Admission to the program is based on the evaluation of candidates’ curricula, their motivation letter, and their report on the development of a hypothetical research project to be conducted within the PhD, on one of the topics listed in the admission announcement, to be submitted together with the application.
Each year, a limited number of scholarships are awarded to candidates who rank first in the selection process.
