Biomechanics of Soft Tissues
The research contributes to the Departmental area “MATERIALS AND MECHANICS OF MATERIALS”, i.e., “Theoretical, applied and computational mechanics of materials and structures”. The group is active in the modeling and simulation of soft biological tissues with particular attention to the biomechanics of the eye and smooth muscles. Particular experience has been accumulated in the development of models for anisotropic materials in finite kinematics, in the generation of dedicated geometries based on optical images, in multi-objective identification procedures involving geometry, materials, and actions, in the simulation of in-vivo clinical tests and in dedicated patient surgery, taking into account fluid-solid coupling, in micro-mechanical modeling of tissue pathologies related to tissue structure degeneration. The group works in close collaboration with ophthalmologists, clinicians, and laser machine manufacturers, and with the LABS (Laboratory of Biological Structures) laboratory of the Chemistry Department of the Politecnico di Milano.
