PhDTalks<\/strong>\u00a0is a series of seminars and discussions among PhD candidates. The events aim to provide a space for networking among doctoral students and for engaging with the many projects developed within our department.<\/p>\n

The speaker Chiara Bottaro<\/strong>\u00a0will deliver a seminar entitled\u00a0\u201cCity-scale mapping of urban tree species and structure through multispectral and tristereoscopic satellite data integration<\/span>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the end of the event, a light refreshment will be offered, sponsored by the department.<\/p>\n

Abstract
\n<\/strong>This study presents a multi-source remote sensing approach for mapping individual urban trees across the city of Milan, integrating spectral and structural data to support urban ecosystem assessment. Tree species are classified using supervised methods applied to WorldView-2 imagery, with municipal tree inventory data for training and validation. Structural attributes, including tree height and crown size, are derived from a canopy height model generated from Beijing-3 tristereoscopic images and LiDAR-based terrain data. The workflow addresses challenges related to data volume and spatial misalignment, producing high-resolution, GIS-compatible maps for urban planning and environmental monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaker\u2019s Bio<\/strong>
\nChiara is a PhD candidate at the Politecnico di Milano, Department of Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering, Section of Geodesy. She obtained a double master\u2019s degree with honors in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Milan and the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. Her research, funded by the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC), focuses on mapping and monitoring urban vegetation biodiversity using remote sensing techniques. Her expertise includes multi-sensor digital photogrammetry, satellite image processing, and the use of photogrammetric techniques for digital elevation model reconstruction from tristereoscopic satellite imagery.
