SUMMARY:Solution of Inverse Problems of the Heat Equation using Shape Optimization and a Fast Parabolic Boundary Element Solver
DESCRIPTION:Venerdì 3 ottobre si terrà un seminario presso l’aula 087 (Edificio 4) alle ore 11:00 dal titolo “Solution of Inverse Problems of the Heat Equation using Shape Optimization and a Fast Parabolic Boundary Element Solver”. \nIl seminario sarà tenuto dal Prof. Johannes Tausch\, Southern Methodist University. \nAbstract \nA typical inverse problem is to determine the shape of an inclusion from measurements of temperatures and heat fluxes on the exterior boundary. This is known to be a severely ill posed problem. One way to improve the conditioning is to incorporate transient temperature information which leads to an inverse problem of the transient heat equation. \nOur approach is to minimize the difference of the boundary data obtained with a given shape and the measured data. In addition\, descent based optimization will be applied to find the optimal shape. To that end\, the concept of the shape gradient is introduced\, which describes the change of the solution of the heat equation with respect to changing the geometry of the domain. We will then show that the shape gradient can be computed by solving a state and an adjoint equation\, which are forward problems of the heat equation. \nThe latter problems are be solved using parabolic boundary integral equations. Here a fast method is used to efficiently evaluate the time convolutions of parabolic layer potentials. \nThe talk will conclude with numerical experiments that illustrate the efficiency and reconstruction quality of the approach. \n\nSpeaker’s bio\n\nJohannes Tausch received a PhD from Colorado State University and was a postdoctoral researcher at the Research Lab of Electronics at MIT. He is now a professor of mathematics at Southern Methodist University. His expertise includes numerical analysis and scientific computation\, with applications to wave propagation\, heat transfer and inverse problems. He is the managing editor of the Journal of Integral Equations and Applications.

SUMMARY:Multiscale Analysis of Hydrogeological Process in a Multilayer Aquifer System
\nAbstract \nThe multiscale analysis of hydrogeological processes in a multilayer aquifer system seeks to understand the dynamic interactions between geological heterogeneity and groundwater flow across different spatial and temporal scales. Such systems consist of alternating permeable and semipermeable layers that control the exchange of water\, solutes\, and energy between confined and unconfined zones. By integrating geological\, hydrogeochemical\, and geophysical data\, the approach provides a coherent framework for identifying recharge and discharge mechanisms\, hydraulic connectivity\, and the aquifer system’s response to natural and anthropogenic stressors. \nAt a methodological level\, the study combines conceptual and numerical modeling to capture the variability and uncertainty inherent to subsurface processes. This multiscale integration—from pore-scale mechanisms to regional groundwater flow—enables the evaluation of key parameters such as transmissivity\, storage\, and vertical leakage\, and supports predictive analyses under scenarios of climate variability or resource exploitation. The results contribute to a better understanding of groundwater dynamics\, improving the design of monitoring networks and management strategies for sustainable use of complex aquifer systems. \n\nSpeaker’s bio\n\n\nLeonardo David Donado is a Full Professor at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia\, Faculty of Engineering\, where he leads the HYDS Research Group (Environment + Water + Energy + Society). His work focuses on groundwater-surface water interactions\, hydrogeological modeling\, and integrating geosciences\, data science\, and environmental management for sustainable water and energy systems. He has directed large-scale national projects funded by MinCiencias and the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH). He has collaborated internationally with institutions such as ETH Zürich\, Politecnico di Milano\, and Université de Rennes. Professor Donado has extensive experience in teaching\, research\, and innovation\, with a strong record in training graduate students\, coordinating accredited academic programs\, and contributing to Colombia’s energy transition and water governance strategies. Nowadays is an Adjunct Professor at DICA Polimilano.

SUMMARY:Stochastic and non-stochastic assessment of complex hydrosystems
DESCRIPTION:Mercoledì 29 ottobre si terrà un seminario presso l’aula Fassò (Edificio 4A) alle ore 10:00 dal titolo “Stochastic and non-stochastic assessment of complex hydrosystems”. \nIl seminario sarà tenuto dal Prof. Alonso Pizarro\, Universidad Diego Portales. \nAula virtuale: https://politecnicomilano.webex.com/meet/davidedanilo.chiarelli \nAbstract \nComplex hydrosystems are related to high uncertainty due to the complexity of different processes and their interaction at various spatial and temporal scales. Usually\, the main line of assessment relies on deterministic approaches\, even though stochastics is the ideal way to move forward. This presentation uses deterministic\, stochastic\, and their combination to tackle complex hydrosystems. In particular\, fluvial monitoring\, bibliometric analysis\, large-scale rainfall-runoff modelling\, and applications to critical infrastructure are covered. \n\nSpeaker’s bio\n\nAlonso Pizarro is a professor of hydrology & hydraulic engineering at Universidad Diego Portales. His research interests include hydrology\, hydraulics\, sediment transport\, bridge scour\, flood prediction\, extreme flood events\, stochastic processes in hydrology\, environmental monitoring using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs)\, and remote sensing applications for fluvial monitoring. Alonso utilises advanced surveying and flow measurement techniques and laboratory experiments. He is proficient in advanced programming languages (Matlab and Python) and GIS software (QGIS)\, which he uses to manipulate and analyse complex datasets\, regularly publishing research articles in leading international journals. Alonso has recently adopted open science practices\, making available data\, codes\, and analyses.
