SUMMARY:PhDTalks | FROM SH*T TO GOLD: exploring novel opportunities for agricultural waste bioconversion into valuable products
\nLo speaker Francesca Di Benedetto condurrà un seminario dal titolo “FROM SH*T TO GOLD: exploring novel opportunities for agricultural waste bioconversion into valuable products”. \nAl termine dell’evento sarà disponibile un piccolo rinfresco finanziato dal dipartimento. \nSarà possibile seguire la conferenza anche online al seguente link. \nAbstract \nAnaerobic digestion (AD) converts livestock manure and waste crops into biogas\, a renewable energy source. It also produces two major by-products: digestate and carbon dioxide. Digestate retains most nutrients from the original feedstocks and has long been used as fertilizer\, but its massive spread has led to environmental issues\, prompting EU regulation. As energy demand increases\, so does the number of AD plants\, and creating additional value from digestate and CO2 has become a priority. Meanwhile\, rising population and changing diets are increasing protein demand\, straining land and feed resources. A promising strategy to address these challenges is the bioconversion of AD by-products into Single-Cell Proteins for animal feed\, exploiting liquid digestate as a nutrient-rich substrate\, CO₂ as a carbon source\, and green H₂ as energy input. Gasifying solid digestate can further enhance resource efficiency and process autonomy\, replacing external H₂ and lowering costs. This integrated approach upcycles nutrients and reduces reliance on conventional feed crops\, aligning with circular economy principles. \nSpeaker’s bio \nFrancesca holds an MSc in Environmental Sciences from Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca\, awarded in 2022. She is currently a PhD candidate in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (38th cycle) at Politecnico di Milano. Her research focuses on the valorization of agricultural by-products to enhance the sustainability of waste-to-resource processes. Specifically\, she is investigating bacteria-based biorefineries for the bioconversion of anaerobic digestion by-products into proteins for animal feed applications\, with an emphasis on circular economy principles. \n\n\n In her spare time\, Francesca enjoys singing and playing the piano\, hiking in the mountains\, and perfecting the art of turning food into happiness.

SUMMARY:PhDTalks | A Unified Open-Source Framework for Geospatial Data Management in the Built and Natural Environment
\nLo speaker Federica Gaspari condurrà un seminario dal titolo “A Unified Open-Source Framework for Geospatial Data Management in the Built and Natural Environment”. \nAl termine dell’evento sarà disponibile un piccolo rinfresco finanziato dal dipartimento. \nSarà possibile seguire la conferenza anche online al seguente link. \nAbstract \nManaging geospatial data across the built and natural environment requires flexible\, interoperable solutions. Today’s challenges call for integrating diverse spatial and thematic datasets\, often limited by proprietary tools and fragmented workflows. This talk presents an open-source\, modular framework designed to tackle these issues through streamlined geodata collection\, management\, and 2D/3D visualization. Real-world case studies—from civil infrastructure monitoring and glacier retreat analysis to cultural heritage documentation—demonstrate how customizable platforms can support data-driven decision-making. Ongoing research explores low-code solutions\, IoT integration\, and virtual reality features to further enhance usability and reproducibility in geomatics applications. \nSpeaker’s bio \nFederica holds an MSc in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering from Politecnico di Milano\, which she obtained in 2020. She is currently completing her visiting semester in TECNE – Autostrade per l’Italia as part of her PhD in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (38th cycle). Her research focuses on designing and implementing open-source geospatial solutions for efficiently managing data in real-world scenarios\, with applications in bridge inspections\, cultural heritage valorisation\, and glacier monitoring. Passionate about open science culture\, she is an active member of the Italian and international FOSS4G and OpenStreetMap communities.\n\nIn her free time\, she enjoys cinema\, listening to Beyoncé music\, playing padel and swimming in her beloved Lake Maggiore.

SUMMARY:Data-Driven Modeling of Complex Fluid Flows via Scientific Machine Learning
DESCRIPTION:Lunedì 30 Giugno si terrà un seminario presso l’aula Fassò (Edificio 4a) dalle ore 11:00 dal titolo “Data-Driven Modeling of Complex Fluid Flows via Scientific Machine Learning”. \nIl seminario sarà tenuto da Cássio Machiaveli Oishi\, São Paulo State University UNESP. \nAbstract \nRecent advances in machine learning have significantly influenced the simulation of Newtonian fluids\, and there is growing interest in extending these techniques to complex fluids with non-Newtonian properties\, such as viscoelastic flows. In this talk\, we present data-driven frameworks for constructing interpretable reduced-order models of viscoelastic fluids\, combining both linear and nonlinear dimensionality reduction methods with the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy) algorithm. In particular\, we explore the development of physics-informed metrics to enhance nonlinear dimensionality reduction tailored to viscoelastic behavior. We also highlight recent progress in the SciML domain\, with a focus on applications to droplet dynamics.
