SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Innovative Inertial MEMS: Micro-Systems for Motion Detection for New Fabrication Process
\nLo speaker Yassine Banani condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Innovative Inertial MEMS: Micro-Systems for Motion Detection for New Fabrication Process”. \nAbstract \nNavigation in environments without external references -such as open oceans or airspace above clouds- requires devices that can measure motion without the need to communicate directly with the outside world. This problem has found a solution in devices based on MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology. In particular\, MEMS inertial sensors are now the most widely used option for accurately and reliably measuring accelerations and changes in orientation of an object in space. Due to their ability to detect motion and changes in orientation without the need for GPS signal or other external systems. MEMS devices are increasingly being applied in various fields\, from air and sea navigation to autonomous vehicles. In this presentation we propose innovative devices that take advantage of a new fabrication process to achieve high performance and reliability in measurements. \nSpeaker’s bio \nYassine holds an MSc in Civil Engineering from Politecnico di Milano\, in 2020. He is currently a PhD candidate in Structural\, Seismic and Geotechnical Engineering (38th cycle). His research focuses on the design and numerical simulation of innovative MEMS(Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensors and actuators for a new fabrication process. \nIn his free time\, he enjoys reading\, traveling with friends and eating pasta.

SUMMARY:Polimi LCA Network
DESCRIPTION:Nell’evento verrà presentata la “Polimi LCA network”\, ossia una nuova rete interna all’Ateneo che riunisce ricercatori e professori accomunati dall’applicazione della metodologia Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in diversi ambiti.

SUMMARY:PhDTalks | A downscaling method based on wet spell and analysis of future climate variation under CMIP6 Scenarios in Upper Yangtze River Basin\, China
\nLo speaker Xu Han condurrà un seminario dal titolo “A downscaling method based on wet spell and analysis of future climate variation under CMIP6 Scenarios in Upper Yangtze River Basin\, China”. \nAbstract \nAccording to recent studies\, the past decade was the hottest on record\, and climate change is speeding up. As the largest basin\, and the primary source of hydropower in China\, the impact of climate change on the Upper Yangtze river Basin (UYRB) is particularly crucial. We downscaled GCMs’ outputs of precipitation (wet/dry spells considered to reduce GCMS wet days overestimation) and temperature projections (2024-2100)\, under four typical Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs)\, and we pursued a trend analysis on these potential future climate projections. We found significant trends of precipitation in all months\, unless for August\, across all socioeconomic pathways. This could lead to future heatwaves\, and droughts. Additionally\, for SSP370 and SSP585\, there were no significant trends of precipitation in December\, but there were significant upward trends in temperature. This may result in drier winters than now\, increased potential evapotranspiration\, and reduced surface (snow) water storage\, impacting water resources availability. Consecutive dry/wet days at station\, and basin scale show spatial-temporal heterogeneity\, but generally wet spells are longer\, and dry spells shorten moving from S-E to N-W. In addition\, we carried out a comprehensive evaluation of past (1980-2014) monthly\, and annual climate output of chosen models. \nSpeaker’s bio \nMy name is Xu Han\, my hometown is in Handan\, northern China\, not far from Beijing. I came to Italy to study in 2021. My research is mainly related to meteorology and hydrology\, specifically climate change\, model evaluation\, downscaling methods\, extreme weather\, etc. \nI like traveling\, music\, movies\, running
