SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Formulation and probabilistic assessment of Diclofenac fate in a soilwater system under uncertainty
\nLa speaker Laura Ceresa condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Formulation and probabilistic assessment of Diclofenac fate in a soilwater system under uncertainty”.  \nAbstract: \nDrinking water resources are threatened by several contaminants. Among these\, Diclofenac (Dcf) poses major concerns due to its persistent and bioactive nature. Developing predictive tools to interpret its fate is then key to drive environmental protection actions. The modeling framework presented in this PhD talk is based on conceptualizing the molecular dynamics of Dcf biodegradation in a selected soil-water system. The geochemical model is subject to stochastic calibration through Acceptance-Rejection Sampling. The associated results fully embed uncertainty quantification and show that data scarcity and/or redundant model parametrization might deteriorate the quality of some parameter estimates. The issue is addressed by reducing the complexity of the model. The resulting formulations are framed within a multi-model context where the performance of each (re-calibrated) candidate model is assessed (in a relative sense) through the Kashyap identification criterion. The results suggest that an optimal trade-off in terms of model complexity (i.e.\, level of parametrization) given data availability can be assessed to satisfactorily interpret the system dynamics.

SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Aerodynamic noise generation in ducted flows
DESCRIPTION:We are glad to announce that our next PhDTalks Seminar will be held on Tuesday 19 July in room 3.1.6 from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm CET.  \nPhDTalks is a series of seminars and discussions between PhD students. The events are aimed at providing a place to network and get in contact with many of the projects developed in our department.  \nSpeaker Luca Nicola Quaroni will talk about “Aerodynamic noise generation in ducted flows”.  \n \nAbstract:  \nFlow-control devices are fundamental components in fluid distribution systems. They work by dissipating excess mechanical energy through turbulence and\, in gas flows\, aerodynamic noise is produced as a by-product. The confinement of ducts profoundly influences the propagation of sound and its transmission to the outside environment. In this PhD talk\, the results of an experimental campaign on an air flow facility are presented.   \nYou can watch the event online by clicking here.  \nAt the end of each event a small refreshment funded by the department will be available.  \nThese events are self organised by PhD students and speakers are chosen on a voluntary basis.\n \nIf you are interested in presenting during one of these events\, please send an email to andrea.opreni@polimi.it if you belong to the ISSG programme or to chiara.recalcati@polimi.it if you are attending the IAI programme.

SUMMARY:SUMMER SCHOOL 2022 | Performance\, Protection & Strengthening of Structures under Extreme Loading
DESCRIPTION:From 8 to 13 July the Summer School 2022 will take place at the Lecco Campus. \nThe new trends adopted in standards to face the structure safety in case of exceptional loads conditions will be presented. An introduction to blast and impact behaviour will be carried out by Prof. Alejandro Perez Caldentey\, followed by the exposition of numerical procedures to model blast\, fire and impact actions and their reliability when compared to experimental tests proposed by Prof. Ozbolt. Then prof. Taerwe illustrated the effectiveness of reinforced concrete when exposed to fire. Finally prof. di Prisco spoke about the possibility to improve the bearing capacity of tunnel segments when exposed to blast and fire by using layered high performance fibre reinforced solutions. \nCourse description: \nThe course on Performance\, protection\, strengthening of structures under extreme loading is offered to PhD students in Civil and Structural Engineering and MS Engineers interested to deepen the computation of structural safety of constructions subjected to exceptional loads like\, fire\, blast and impact. \nThe attendants come usually from different Universities and are Italian and foreigners. It will be offered in Hybrid modalities: in presence and in remote configuration. The official language is English. The lecturers come from four different countries: Germany\, Belgium\, Spain and Italy. \nFor the in-presence attendants\, the socialization will be favoured by the social events organized during the week-end: a trip on Lake Como and its famous villas on Saturday afternoon and an excursion to the mountains dominating the lake Como on Sunday. \nThe course is arrived to its third edition: the previous editions were nicely appreciated by both the attendants and the lecturers. The slide presented will be distributed to all the participants\, as well as many literature references. A certificate of attendance will be distributed as the end of the course. \nAt the end of the course a multiple choise form will be distributed: a minimum of 18 correct answers over 32 questions will be required to obtain the recognizing of the CFP Credits (continuous formation planned in Italy for the practitioners). A homework related to a design example will be proposed to all the PhD students: they will have around 2 months to perform it. A final discussion of the homework will be planned to obtain the final evaluation and the ECTs credits. \n  \nYou can download the registration form and the programme by cliking here. \n  \n

SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Data-Driven Modelling of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems
DESCRIPTION:We are glad to announce that our next PhDTalks Seminar will be held on Tuesday 5 July in room 3.1.6 from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm CET. \nPhDTalks is a series of seminars and discussions between PhD students. The events are aimed at providing a place to network and get in contact with many of the projects developed in our department. \nSpeaker Paolo Conti will talk about “Data-Driven Modelling of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems”. \n  \n \nAbstract: \nData driven modelling is an emerging research field that aims to identify physical models from measurements. This is a crucial new direction because the governing equations of many problems might not be known a priori. How to leverage data from different sources? How to correctly identify the dimensionality of the dynamics? How to exploit the identified model? In this talk we will answer these questions and propose novel strategies to identify models directly from data. \nYou can watch the event online by clicking here. \nAt the end of each event a small refreshment funded by the department will be available. \nThese events are self organised by PhD students and speakers are chosen on a voluntary basis.\nIf you are interested in presenting during one of these events\, please send an email to andrea.opreni@polimi.it if you belong to the ISSG programme or to chiara.recalcati@polimi.it if you are attending the IAI programme.

SUMMARY:Resonances of Nonlinear Mechanical Systems: a Nonlinear Normal Mode Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Mercoledì 29 Giugno si svolgerà presso l’aula Castigliano\, un seminario dal titolo “Resonances of Nonlinear Mechanical Systems: a Nonlinear Normal Mode Perspective” tenuto dal Prof. Gaëtan Kerschen\, Professore di Ingegneria Aerospaziale nel Dipartimento di Ingegneria Aerospaziale e Meccanica dell’Università di Liegi (Belgio). \nAbstract: \nThe concept of resonance is central in structural dynamics\, because the maximum amplitude at which a system vibrates occurs at resonance frequencies. Unlike linear systems\, nonlinear systems can exhibit different types of resonances including fundamental\, superharmonic\, superharmonic\, internal and isolated resonances. In this presentation\, we will show how nonlinear modal analysis\, and\, specifically\, the numerical computation of nonlinear normal modes\, can be exploited for uncovering and understanding nonlinear resonances. The experimental identification of nonlinear normal modes will also be addressed in the talk. \nSpeaker’s Biosketch: \nGaëtan Kerschen completed his Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Liège in Belgium in 2003. In 2003 and 2004\, he was a visiting postdoctoral fellow at National Technical University of Athens and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Since 2007\, he has been a faculty member at the University of Liège\, where he is a professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. His expertise is primarily in the area of structural dynamics and orbital mechanics. He is the recipient of several international awards including two European Research Council (ERC) grants\, the Doak Award from the Journal of Sound and Vibration and the SAGE Publishing Young Engineer Award. He was one of the principal investigators of the OUFTI-1 nanosatellite launched by the Soyuz rocket in 2016. He is the co-founder of NOLISYS\, a startup company which provides solutions and software for nonlinear vibrating systems.

SUMMARY:Performance-based Optimisation of Energy Dissipation Systems for Seismic Applications
DESCRIPTION:Lunedì 30 Maggio si svolgerà presso l’aula Fassò\, un seminario dal titolo “Performance-based Optimisation of Energy Dissipation Systems for Seismic Applications” tenuto dal Dr. Iman Hajirasouliha\, Professore associato in ingegneria strutturale e leader del gruppo di ingegneria sismica (EEG) presso l’Università di Sheffield\, UK. \nAbstract: \nEnergy dissipation devices are increasingly used for seismic strengthening of existing buildings or as efficient seismic resistant systems in modern construction. However\, optimum design of these devices in multi-storey buildings can be a challenging task due to their complex behaviour and high computational costs. This study presents a practical multi-criteria performance-based optimisation framework for more efficient design of non-linear dampers under seismic loads. The proposed method is based on the concept of Uniform Distribution of Damage and can significantly reduce (up to 300 times) the computational costs compared to conventional optimisation methods such as Genetic Algorithm. To improve the convergence rate\, an adaptive formulation is developed that is modified in proportion to the level of performance violation. The proposed method can be efficiently used to satisfy multiple performance objectives in line with performance-based design recommendations of current seismic codes. The efficiency of the framework is demonstrated for steel frames with non-linear viscous as well as RC frames equipped with a novel friction-based wall damper. It is found that the optimum damping distribution identified by the proposed methodology consistently leads to considerably lower local and global damage indices compared to the solutions with an equal-cost uniform damping distribution. \nSpeaker’s Biosketch: \nDr Iman Hajirasouliha is an Associate Professor in Structural Engineering and Leader of Earthquake Engineering Group (EEG) at the University of Sheffield\, UK. He has over 20 years of research and consultancy experience in the fields of earthquake engineering\, performance-based optimisation\, light-weight structures\, energy dissipation devices\, and novel strengthening techniques\, leading to over 150 refereed journal papers and 100 conference publications in these areas. He has been Principal or Co-investigator of over €9M EU and UK funded projects led by his group. Dr Hajirasouliha is a member of several national and international technical committees and research networks\, including fib Task Groups 6.6 and 7.6 and IABSE Task Group 1.1. He is currently Associate Editor of Practice Periodical on Structural Design & Construction (ASCE)\, International Journal of Earthquake and Impact Engineering (IJEIE) and Frontiers in Built Environment (Earthquake Engineering Section).

SUMMARY:Twist and Shout: Elastic Orbital Angular Momentum
\nAbstract: \nWe identify that guided flexural waves in pipes carry a well-defined orbital angular momentum (OAM)\, associated with the compressional dilatational potential. The transfer of elastic OAM can be achieved through the coupling of the dilatational component of ultrasonic waves in the pipe with the pressure field in a fluid in which the pipe is partially submerged; the circumferential distribution of the stress in the pipe act as a continuous phased pressure source in the fluid\, resulting in the generation of Bessel-like acoustic beams. We demonstrate the existence of elastic OAM through theory and observe its transfer via simulation that is corroborated experimentally. \nSpeaker’s Biosketch: \nGregory is from Dundee\, Scotland\, where he lived until moving to Glasgow in 2012 to undertake an MSci in physics at the University of Glasgow. Afterwards he moved to Imperial College London where he obtained a PhD in applied mathematics under Prof. Richard Craster\, winning the Yael Dowker Prize for best mathematics PhD thesis for his research into wave propagation effects in structured materials. He continuted at Imperial as a doctoral prize research fellow before being awarded a Research Fellowship from the Royal Commission for the Exhibiton of 1851 at the University of Exeter in 2021.\nHis research interests include manipulating wave propagation using structured materials and metamaterials\, across a variety of wave regimes from electromagnetism to elasticity\, with a focus on applications in energy harvesting and vibration control.

SUMMARY:Seismic performance of existing RC buildings: field evidences\, research and design standards
DESCRIPTION:Giovedì 5 Maggio si svolgerà presso l’aula Pedeferri (edificio 6)\, un seminario dal titolo “Seismic performance of existing RC buildings: field evidences\, research and design standards” tenuto dal prof. Humberto Varum\, professore presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile della Facoltà di Ingegneria dell’Università di Porto (FEUP). \nAbstract: \nThe existing building stock is characterized by multiple types of structural systems. Architecture requirements in many situations demanded complex structural systems\, sometimes not in line with the general structural design code recommendations. The structural solutions adopted in design may enforce stiffness and strength irregularities\, both in-plan and in-elevation. In other perspective\, many existing buildings with RC framed or walls structural systems may present strong irregularities\, particularly in the bottom storey\, due to the absence of infill panels\, for the location of stores or garages. \nIn this seminar\, it is given an overview of the damages observed in existing RC buildings in recent earthquakes. The strategy proposed in modern codes for the seismic design of buildings is briefly presented and discussed. A brief presentation of the research work (experimental and numerical) carried out at the University of Porto (FEUP) is presented. To conclude\, some suggestions of research lines are advanced in support to the future development of seismic design codes. \nSpeaker’s Biosketch: \nHumberto Varum is currently full professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP)\, Portugal. Previously\, he was associate professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Aveiro\, Portugal\, where he had taught from 1997 to 2014. Since October 2010\, he is Honorary Lecturer at the Department of Civil\, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering\, University College of London (UCL)\, London\, United Kingdom. In 2012\, he was professor of the Master in “Evaluation Control and Reduction of Environmental Seismic Risk”\, at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”\, Rome\, Italy. Since July 2016\, he is Visiting Professor at the College of Civil Engineering\, Fuzhou University\, Fujian\, China. He is director of the PhD program in Civil Engineering at FEUP.
