SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Hazard and risk assessment in urban areas based on 3D Phisics-Based ground shaking scenarios
\nLa speaker Jiayue Lin condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Hazard and risk assessment in urban areas based on 3D Phisics-Based ground shaking scenarios”.  \nAl termine dell’evento sarà disponibile un piccolo rinfresco finanziato dal dipartimento. \nSarà possibile seguire la conferenza anche online al seguente link. \nAbstract: \nWith the growth of global urban population and the concentration of economic activities in cities\, the analysis of the impact of devastating earthquakes plays a crucial role in disaster risk reduction in large urban areas. Earthquake ground motion models are a key component in the chain for seismic risk assessment\, both within probabilistic and deterministic frameworks\, providing estimates of the probability distribution of ground motion intensity measures as a function of explanatory variables\, such as magnitude\, distance\, and site conditions. Standard empirical approaches\, i.e. Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs)\, are routinely used in engineering practice but suffer from some\nintrinsic drawbacks\, such as: (i) they are poorly calibrated in the near-source region of strong earthquakes; (ii) they cannot account for complex\, site-specific\, geological conditions; (iii) they do not provide a detailed and region-specific description of spatial variability of ground motion; (iv) they provide only peak values of ground motion without the full waveforms which may be used in dynamic\nanalyses of structures.\n3D physics-based numerical simulations (PBS) of seismic ground motion\, which reflect the physics of the whole seismic wave propagation problem\, from the seismic source\, through the propagation path\, up to the local site response\, have emerged as a promising tool\, complementary to GMPEs\, for predicting earthquake ground motion and its spatial variability during realistic earthquakes. In this\ncontext\, the main goal of this PhD thesis is to explore the use of 3D PBS (by the computer code SPEED\, http://speed.mox.polimi.it/ ) in seismic risk assessment at urban scale\, by coupling an advanced characterization of ground motion and of this spatial variability with state-of-the-art\nvulnerability and fragility models\, with application to the case study of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nJiayue Lin is a PhD student at Politecnico di Milano within the H2020-Marie-Curie Project\, and she has been working on different aspects related to the incorporation of ground shaking scenarios from physics-based numerical simulations in seismic risk models\, with application to the Thessaloniki case study. \nJiayue is simply loving her life with respecting her inner voice\, and at this present\, she is missing Traditional Chinese Calligraphy very much\, which is her habit that she enjoyed when she was in China.

SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Sediment transport monitoring and Smart-Sed\, a new sediment erosion and transport model
\nLa speaker Monica Corti condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Sediment transport monitoring and Smart-Sed\, a new sediment erosion and transport model”.  \nAl termine dell’evento sarà disponibile un piccolo rinfresco finanziato dal dipartimento. \nSarà possibile seguire la conferenza anche online al seguente link. \nAbstract: \nThe development of smart strategies for geo-hazard management in urban areas has lately become crucial in relation to the higher occurrence of extreme events\, expected as a consequence of climate change. Therefore\, the engineering geology research group of Politecnico di Milano has recently developed a new sediment erosion and transport model\, called SMART-SED.\nThe advantages of SMART-SED with respect to other similar models are the automatic detection of the drainage zones\, the statistical downscaling of soil granulometry input maps and the evaluation of the factor of safety at catchment scale. Moreover\, the input data required are few and they are usually open data.\nAfter studies on sediment transport on a mountain catchment located near the Lecco campus of Politecnico\, the model was successfully calibrated and validated\, given the availability of field data over time. Then\, different applications were successfully tested\, as the dam filling evaluation in catchments characterized by different bedrocks in the Italian Alps and in the Apennines. In addition\, the back-analysis of some well-known Italian floods and debris flows events was accomplished\, considering as input the relative rainfall data\, and a simulation of a climate change scenario from the General Circulation Model was performed to understand possible future hazard scenarios.\nA general good performance of the model was observed also for the identification of the unstable slopes and of the flooded areas\, based on comparison with the Italian landslides inventory and with Sentinel Hub maps. Finally\, the simulation of the climate change scenario show an increase of the magnitude of solid and water discharge that has to be taken into account for the adaptation of the actual rainfall thresholds to the future rainfall regimes.\nThe proof of the reliability of SMART-SED results is considered important for the development of a complete hydrological model that can represent an innovative tool for urban planning and risk mitigation in a climate change scenario. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nMonica graduated in Geological Sciences and Technologies at University of Milano-Bicocca in 2019. She has collaborated with Politecnico di Milano working on topics related to engineering geology since 2019\, and she is currently enrolled in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering PhD program (37° cycle) at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Politecnico di Milano. Her research deals with shallow processes related to sediment erosion and transport. \nIn her free time\, Monica enjoys hiking and travelling.
