SUMMARY:Life-Cycle Engineering of Coastal Infrastructure Systems under Multiple Hazards - Integrating Experiments\, Modeling\, and Data-Driven Approaches for Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Venerdì 20 febbraio si terrà un seminario intitolato “Life-Cycle Engineering of Coastal Infrastructure Systems under Multiple Hazards – Integrating Experiments\, Modeling\, and Data-Driven Approaches for Resilience“\, che avrà luogo in Aula Grandori (Edificio 4) alle ore 14:30 CET. \nIl seminario sarà tenuto da Mitsuyoshi Akiyama\, Professore di Ingegneria Civile e Ambientale presso la Waseda University di Tokyo\, Giappone. \n\nAbstract \nThis presentation introduces a life-cycle engineering framework for coastal infrastructure systems that integrates structural experiments\, numerical modeling\, machine learning\, and spatial representation of uncertainty to support resilient system development under multiple hazards. The research aims to connect physical understanding of structural behavior with system level risk and resilience assessment over the entire service life. \nStructural experiments and numerical simulations provide insight into damage mechanisms\, performance variability\, and failure progression under extreme events. These results are complemented by data driven and machine learning-based techniques that support efficient modeling\, uncertainty representation\, and large-scale system evaluation. Spatial modeling is used to capture correlations and interactions among infrastructure components and hazards across coastal regions. \nBy integrating these approaches within a life-cycle perspective\, the framework enables consistent evaluation of risk\, functionality loss\, and recovery of coastal infrastructure systems subjected to interacting hazards such as earthquakes\, tsunamis\, environmental deterioration\, and long-term climate-related effects. The presentation demonstrates how the combination of experiments\, modeling\, and learning contributes to the development of more resilient coastal infrastructure systems and cities. \n\nSpeaker’s bio \nMitsuyoshi Akiyama is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Waseda University. He received his PhD in Civil Engineering from Tohoku University and previously served as Assistant and Associate Professor there before joining Waseda University in 2011. He has held visiting academic appointments at Lehigh University and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. His research addresses life-cycle engineering of coastal infrastructure systems under multiple hazards\, integrating experiments\, modeling\, data-driven approaches\, and probabilistic assessment of risk and resilience. Dr. Akiyama has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and currently serves as Managing Editor of Structure and Infrastructure Engineering and Associate Editor of the Journal of Bridge Engineering. He is a Fellow of SEI and serves as Chair of IABSE Commission 6 on Sustainability. He is also an Executive Committee Member of IABMAS and IALCCE\, and an Executive Board Member of IASSAR.
