SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Numerical Methods for Fluid-Structure Interaction Problems Involving Lightweight Structures
\nAbstract \nProper modelling of Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) phenomena involving lightweight\, deformable structures is essential for understanding the complex dynamics in various engineering applications. In this context\, the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) Navier-Stokes equations are widely used to track the fluid-structure interface properly. However\, mesh distortion remains a significant challenge\, particularly when large deformations occur. This distortion can result in poor resolution of the fluid-structure interface\, which negatively impacts the accuracy of aerodynamic force predictions and structural responses. This research introduces a novel mesh manipulation algorithm designed to reduce mesh distortion\, thereby enhancing the accuracy of FSI simulations. The method is validated through several benchmark cases and applied to real-world problems\, including dragonfly flight\, sail deformation and hydrofoil\, demonstrating its robustness and effectiveness. \nSpeaker’s bio \n\n\nDaniele holds an MSc in Mathematical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 2022. He is currently a PhD candidate in Structural\, Seismic\, and Geotechnical Engineering (38th cycle) at Politecnico di Milano. His research focuses on advanced Fluid-Structure Interaction methods and multiphase techniques within the Finite Element framework. In particular\, he is developing novel algorithms to address Finite Element mesh distortion and submerged lightweight structures.  \nIn his free time\, Daniele enjoys reading\, swimming\, and travelling around the world.
