Gli eventi hanno lo scopo di fornire un luogo dove creare un network tra dottorandi ed entrare in contatto con i molti progetti sviluppati nel nostro dipartimento. \nLo speaker Luca Penserini condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Innovative methodologies to support the implementation of sustainable wastewater reuse in agriculture: risk and impacts assessment”.  \nAl termine dell’evento sarà disponibile un piccolo rinfresco finanziato dal dipartimento. \nSarà possibile seguire la conferenza anche online al seguente link. \nAbstract  \nWater pollution and scarcity of clean freshwater\, exacerbated by climate change and population growth\, are posing a global risk not only limited to the environment\, but also involving human health and related socio-economical aspects\, raising a need for sustainable water management practices. The reuse of reclaimed wastewater (RWW)\, especially for agriculture\, i.e.\, the most water demanding sector\, has been recognized as a reliable alternative source to conventional freshwater. Either direct and indirect reuse of RWW inherently connects water in numerous environmental compartments (i.e.\, raw water\, soil\, crop). This interconnection leads to a series of impacts\, either positive\, as the water stress alleviation or the enhancement of agricultural productivity through the supply of nutrients\, or negative\, as the cross-contamination of different environmental compartments with contaminants of emerging concern (CECs)\, pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARBs). All these impacts need to be evaluated through specific models to avoid\, or at least\, mitigate\, potential long-term risks. \nWastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) assume a crucial role in determining the quality of RWW intended for irrigation\, especially considering the compliance requisites delineated in the regulation on minimum requirements for water reuse adopted in June 2023 by the European Parliament (Regulation 2020/741). Moreover\, in this regulation it is stressed the need for a shift from the common practice of establishing minimum quality requirements towards preventive risk analysis aimed at minimizing risks and maximizing positive impacts throughout all the steps of the RWW reuse chain. \nIn this context\, the present project is aimed at developing a holistic risk-based framework for the integrated assessment of RWW reuse practices’ impacts\, to support decision-makers and water utilities in planning\, design and comparing the different alternatives and determine the optimum solutions to minimize risks and social costs. \nSpeaker’s bio \nLuca is a PhD student in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (37th cycle) at Politecnico of Milan. He has a Master of Science in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering obtained in 2020 at Politecnico of Milan. \nLuca works in the safeWATER research group and his research activities focus on the impacts modelling of wastewater reuse in agriculture practices\, emphasizing risk assessment procedures as a key focal point. \nIn his free time\, Luca loves playing sports and travelling.

Gli eventi hanno lo scopo di fornire un luogo dove creare un network tra dottorandi ed entrare in contatto con i molti progetti sviluppati nel nostro dipartimento. \nLo speaker Manuel Bertulessi condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Flood Risk Mitigation through Smart Levee Solutions based on Fiber Optic Sensors: An Applied Case Study in Emilia-Romagna”.  \nAl termine dell’evento sarà disponibile un piccolo rinfresco finanziato dal dipartimento. \nSarà possibile seguire la conferenza anche online al seguente link. \nAbstract  \nThe Smart Levee concept is an increasingly emerging practice applied to the monitoring of the serviceability and stability of riverbanks\, a strategic asset for flood risk management in lowland areas. The levee smartness is given by a network of different kinds of sensors installed on site that\, through a data interpretation layer\, provide continuous information about the health conditions of the structure and its response to external solicitations. This approach can bring a strong improvement to the efficiency of the maintenance procedures\, as well as to the surveillance procedures during flood events. \nWe adopt this concept by conceiving an anti-erosion levee sensing revetment\, based on the integration between a geomat reinforced with double twist wire mesh and Polymeric Fiber Optic Sensors (PFOS). The project\, financed by the Agency for Territorial Safety and Civil Protection of the Emilia-Romagna Region\, has been supported by Fondazione Politecnico di Milano\, University of Padua (DICEA)\, Officine Maccaferri Spa ed Optosensing Srl. \nLab experiments and finite element modeling have been performed to select the best coupling solution of PFOS to the reinforced geomat\, hence design the layout of the sensing revetment. A prototype of this technology has been installed\, both landside and riverside\, on a 25 m linear length portion of the levee bank of the Grizzaga creek in Fossalta\, by the town of Modena in Emilia-Romagna Region. This area hosts one of the most critical nodes of the fluvial network of the region and was hit by floods frequently in the past. The experimental site has been also equipped with some agronomic and geotechnical sensors to investigate the mechanical behavior of the levee when it is subjected to external solicitations – e.g. those caused by a flood event – hence\, improving the response of the monitoring solution. Moreover\, we designed and installed below sensing revetments placed riverside a testing system based on a set of pneumatic cushions that will be used to exert locally controlled soil deformation. \nThe system successfully passed an important stress test during the heavy flood events that hit the Region in May 2023\, detecting properly all the evolution of the flood wave. Further investigations are still ongoing\, both with on-site tests and laboratory activities to characterize the sensibility of the monitoring solution to different kinds of possible solicitations. \nSpeaker’s bio \n\nManuel is a PhD student in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (37th cycle) at Politecnico di Milano. He got his MSc Degree in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering in 2019 at Politecnico di Milano. \n\n\nManuel’s research activity deals with the conceptualization of innovative monitoring solutions based on Fiber Optic Sensors for critical hydraulic infrastructures. \n\n\nIn his free time\, Manuel loves travelling and hiking.

Thanks to its low conductivity\, it is known to exhibit good behaviour in fire. However\, the fact that concrete is prone to the spalling phenomenon when exposed to fire poses a significant obstacle to its widespread utilization. Explosive spalling keeps being one of the main open issues concerning the fire safety of concrete structures. Though it is recognized that cracks in the exposed cover can be triggered by the combined effect of thermal stress and pore pressure\, the energy source and the mechanism behind the violent projection of fragments are not yet fully understood. in the scope of this presentation\, the latest experimental and numerical results in understanding such complex behavior are presented. \nSpeaker’s bio \nRamin Yarmohammadian is currently a PhD student of the DICA 36th cycle\, titled “Severe spalling in concrete exposed to fire”. He is interested in both experimental and numerical analysis of fire-induced spalling and fracture behaviour of concrete material. As a graduate student\, he investigated spalling using Neutron radiography (NR) techniques to verify the role of moisture in such an event which was also confirmed by the thermo-hygro-mechanical model.   \nIn his PhD research\, new experimental tests were designed not only to rank different concrete mixes (screening tests) but also to shed light on the real mechanism engaged in this event. He also investigated the fracture behaviour of concrete using a new direct tensile test setup (3ACTION) which can control crack opening not to have secondary bending.    \nIn his free time\, he likes to travel and spend time with friends and family.

The techniques presented are designed to efficiently handle a large volume of data by combining knowledge of system physics with the increasingly availability of innovative artificial intelligence techniques. The study is divided into three main phases. \nIn the first phase\, a probabilistic hydrogeological reconstruction is carried out on a large-scale system\, specifically for the Po River basin in Italy. This reconstruction is accomplished using artificial intelligence techniques that have been appropriately adapted to realize the hydrogeological reconstruction and quantify its associated uncertainty. These findings serve as input for the second phase of the study\, which focuses on developing a flow model. To achieve this\, we have developed a methodology for calibration and sensitivity analysis of large-scale groundwater flow models. This methodology includes the application of state-of-the-art optimization algorithms and posterior sensitivity analysis\, which provide information on the sensitivity of the model output (hydraulic load) to variations in parameter values after the calibration phase. The case study for this methodology is the Po River basin\, for which a groundwater flow model has been developed based on available measurements in the region\, including hydraulic head measurements\, satellite precipitation data\, temperature\, land use\, and continental-scale models of soil properties and crops. \nFinally\, the third phase focuses on the development of a deep learning-based methodology aimed at identifying preferential pathways for contaminants in porous media and utilizing the information within these pathways to determine the arrival time of the first quantity of contaminant in a region of interest. This methodology serves as a foundation for the development of artificial intelligence-based methodologies for identifying pathways and travel times of contaminants within aquifers in highly complex systems\, as the system analyzed in the first two phases of this study. \nSpeaker’s bio \nAndrea Manzoni is a Ph.D. candidate in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering at Politecnico di Milano\, with a Master of Science in Energy Engineering\, specializing in oil and gas production from the same institution. \nHis research covers a diverse range of topics. This includes complex models\, groundwater flow\, contaminant transport\, large-scale models\, stochastic inverse modeling\,  sensitivity analysis\,  multiphase flow\, data mining\, remote sensing and on-site data analysis\, applied machine learning\, and computer vision. \nHis Ph.D. thesis focuses on developing a stochastic inverse modeling technique for a large-scale groundwater flow model applied to the groundwater system of the Po River watershed\, as well as a deep learning technique for contaminant transport through porous media. \nIn 2023\, Andrea Manzoni further enriched his expertise as a Visiting Scholar for 5 months at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles\, US). During this time\, he focused on contaminant transport\, the cutting-edge applications of artificial intelligence techniques in computer vision and image processing\, and uncertainty quantification applied to machine learning models. \nIn addition\, Andrea Manzoni has held the position of Vice-President of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter at Politecnico di Milano since 2021.

Gli eventi hanno lo scopo di fornire un luogo dove creare un network tra dottorandi ed entrare in contatto con i molti progetti sviluppati nel nostro dipartimento. \nLo speaker Luca Iorio condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Metamaterials and topological mechanics for elastic wave control”.  \nAl termine dell’evento sarà disponibile un piccolo rinfresco finanziato dal dipartimento. \nSarà possibile seguire la conferenza anche online al seguente link. \nAbstract \nMetamaterials and architected materials are engineered materials with static and dynamic properties beyond (“meta”) those of their individual ingredients.\nTheir role in elastic and acoustic wave manipulation and stress localization has been shown in the last years\, yielding novel results for signal amplification\, energy harvesting and mode conversion.\nIn this talk\, the main results of our research group in the field of elastic wave control through localization\, mode conversion and energy harvesting will be presented. The various techniques used to achieve these kinds of extreme manipulations will be shown.\nThe presentation will conclude on novel and intriguing energy localization phenomena observed in topologically polarized soft structural lattices. \nSpeaker’s bio \nLuca Iorio is a PhD candidate in structural\, seismic and geotechnical engineering (37th cycle) at Politecnico di Milano. Luca has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in materials and nanotechnology engineering. He is currently working on metamaterials for energy harvesting for the European 2020 project Metaveh and more specifically on the study and development of metamaterials for elastic energy localization\, mode conversion and topological mechanics.

Challenges include the representation of local information such as hydrological particularities and small hydraulic structures\, and computational and labour costs. This paper proposes a methodology of flood hazard mapping that merges the best of the two worlds (local and regional studies) based on experiences in Austria. The analysis steps include (a) quality control and correction of river network and catchment boundary data; (b) estimation of flood discharge peaks and volumes on the entire river network; (c) creation of a digital elevation model (DEM) that is consistent with all relevant flood information\, including river bed geometry; (d) simulation of inundation patterns and velocities associated with a consistent flood return period along the entire river network. In each step\, automatic methods are combined with manual interventions in order to maximise the efficiency and at the same time ensure estimation accuracy similar to that of local studies. The accuracy of the estimates is evaluated in each step. The study uses flood discharge records from 781 stations to estimate flood hazard patterns of a given return period at a resolution of 2 m over a total stream length of 38000 km. It is argued that a combined local-regional methodology will advance flood mapping\, making it even more useful in nation-wide or global contexts.

Specifically\, it delves into the long-term self-healing process in pre-cracked UHPC samples that endure continuous sustained tensile stresses across the cracks and are exposed to aggressive environmental conditions for one year. This study not only emphasizes that pre-cracked UHPC\, when exposed to both mechanical stresses and aggressive environments\, can maintain excellent durability and mechanical strength due to its self-healing effect but also lays the foundation for evaluating the self-healing potential of cement-based materials under conditions representative of real-world structural scenarios. \nSpeaker’s bio \nBin is a PhD candidate in the 36th cycle of SSGE at Politecnico di Milano. He holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from Shenzhen University\, China. His current research focuses on the realms of self-healing and durability within the context of fiber-reinforced concrete. Outside the academic sphere\, Bin is passionate about exploring new horizons. Traveling and hiking are his preferred avenues for relaxation and personal enrichment.

SUMMARY:Bayesian assessment of existing concrete structures: dealing with different types of information and challenges for the future
DESCRIPTION:Venerdì 9 febbraio alle ore 11.00 presso l’Aula Castigliano (Edificio 5 – p.za Leonardo da Vinci\, 32 – Milano) si terrà un seminario dal titolo: “Bayesian assessment of existing concrete structures: dealing with different types of information and challenges for the future“\, tenuto dal Prof. Robby Caspeele (Magnel-Vandepitte Laboratory\, Department of Structural Engineering and Building Materials\, Ghent University\, Belgium). \nAbstract \nAn increasing amount of the current activities in the construction sector are oriented towards the assessment of existing structures and the associated repair and upgrading interventions. Although the last decennia significant progress has been made to analytically and numerically simulate the degradation process of concrete structures and their associated structural performance prediction in time\, structural engineers are challenged to deal with the large uncertainties involved. Besides a typical lack of information\, the degradation processes are associated with large uncertainties and when executing additional investigations and measurements\, significant model and measurement uncertainties play a dominant role in the reliability-based performance prediction. Bayesian updating techniques provide a unique engineering tool\, enabling to make inferences where classical statistical approaches fail. It is explained and illustrated how Bayesian updating techniques provide an undeniable advantage in several steps of the assessment process. Degradation models whose parameters generally are difficult to find consensus about\, can gradually be updated when more information becomes available. Variables in structural reliability calculations can be updated on the basis of direct as well as indirect measurement data. Sources of information contained in different types of measurements or even visual inspections can be combined in order to make much more informed inferences and to reduce uncertainties in the reliability-based performance assessment\, compared to when such data is analysed separately. The integration of these approaches into the practical assessment process is proven to be feasible and an outlook is given on future engineering challenges to integrate such approaches further in the life-cycle assessment of existing concrete structures. \nSpeaker’s bio \nRobby Caspeele is a professor in the field of Structural Reliability at Ghent University (UGent) since 2013 and one of the technical directors of the Magnel-Vandepitte Laboratory for Structural Engineering and Building Materials. He received his MSc degree in Civil Engineering in 2006 and his PhD in Civil Engineering in 2010. His main areas of expertise relate to (1) full- and semi-probabilistic structural reliability methods and Bayesian updating techniques in relation to performance-based life-cycle analysis of concrete structures\, (2) structural robustness and membrane action in concrete structures in relation to design against progressive collapse as a result of foreseen and unforeseen events and (3) structural assessment of existing structures in relation to time-dependent degradation\, combining numerical structural analysis approaches with Bayesian updating techniques\, decision making for structural interventions and lifetime performance optimization. He is author of more than 75 publications in peer-reviewed journals and over 200 papers in international scientific conference proceedings. He is also strongly involved in international committees and working groups related to the development of technical guidelines and standards. Among others\, he is a board member of the Joint Committee on Structural Safety\, co-convenor of fib Commission 3 on Existing Structures and chair of the Belgian mirror committee for the Eurocodes.

Concurrently\, diverse user demands have determined the competition for clean water resources\, exacerbated by severe droughts caused by climate change. \nIn highly urbanized areas\, water can be used for different purposes\, discharging very different types of (micro-)pollutants into the sewer system or directly to surface water. In fact\, these systems are often combined and when rain events hit the city\, they can reach their capacity\, discharging untreated wastewater and stormwater directly into water bodies\, causing pollutants overload. Moreover\, wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are currently designed to remove only conventional pollutants\, spreading micropollutants in the environment also in dry-weather. In this way\, different type of contaminants can reach surface water and move across different water sources and compartments. They can accumulate in groundwater and surface water\, where they can also be transferred due to crop irrigation. The complexity in contamination sources\, pathways\, and receptors make urban water management intricate. Correct and well-planned water management is crucial to avoid conflicts among different stakeholders and to limit the risk for the environment and human health. \nTo address these issues\, the present project aims at developing a comprehensive framework for assessing and managing (micro-)pollutants risks in urban water\, modeling their fate and transport across various water sources and compartments\, while also exploring suitable treatment technologies for wet-weather discharges and WWTP effluent. \nSpeaker’s bio \nJessica is a PhD student in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (37th cycle) at Politecnico di Milano. She has a Master of Science in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering obtained in 2021 at Politecnico di Milano. \nJessica works in the safeWATER research group and her research activity focuses on modelling fate and transport of micropollutants in urban water\, assessing the environmental risk and evaluating proper mitigation strategies. \nIn her free time she loves enjoying nature\, playing the piano\, and travelling.

SUMMARY:Advancements in Bayesian Neural Networks to Enhance Predictive Modeling for Civil Engineering Applications
DESCRIPTION:Giovedì 22 febbraio alle ore 11.00 presso l’Aula Fassò (Edificio 4A – p.za Leonardo da Vinci\, 32 – Milano) si terrà un seminario dal titolo: “Advancements in Bayesian Neural Networks to Enhance Predictive Modeling for Civil Engineering Applications“\, tenuto dalla Prof.ssa Audrey Olivier (Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, University of Southern California). \nAbstract \nThe conjuncton of data mining and physics-based modeling holds great potential to help design\, monitor and optimize civil infrastructure systems. Machine learning (ML) tools can be used for a variety of civil engineering applications\, from monitoring the health of structures using sensing data to building efficient surrogates to accelerate mechanistic modeling. The use of ML models for scientific and engineering applications presents unique challenges. Engineering datasets are often noisy\, sparse and imbalanced\, due to the inherent randomness of the underlying physical processes and constraints on data collection. ML predictors must also assimilate physics-based knowledge and intuitions to improve accuracy and generalization away from training data. Finally\, ML models must embed robust prediction of uncertainties to improve trustworthiness for high-consequence decision-making. Framing ML training within a Bayesian inference framework allows for a robust quantification of both aleatory and epistemic uncertainties that arise from data inadequacies\, integration of physics intuitions through prior design\, and assessment of the model’s confidence in its predictions. However\, due to the high-dimensionality and non-physicality of parameters that characterize typical ML models such as neural networks\, application of Bayesian methods in this context raises several challenges\, from prior and likelihood design to posterior inference. In this talk I will present some of the methods we have developed for approximate Bayesian learning of neural networks that integrate meaningful physics-driven priors. I will illustrate the benefits of these methods through a variety of example applications in civil engineering\, from surrogate training to accelerate materials and structural modeling\, contingency analysis in power grid systems\, or ambulance travel time prediction in a dense urban network to help optimize emergency medical services. \nShort Bio \nDr. Olivier holds a Diplôme d’Ingénieur from École Centrale de Nantes\, France\, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics from Columbia University\, USA. She held a postdoctoral appointment at Johns Hopkins University before joining the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southern California as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2021. Dr. Olivier’s research aims to predict and monitor civil infrastructure systems behavior under uncertainty\, by combining innovations in probabilistic data analytics and mechanistic modeling. Being at depths of several tens of metres in an uncertain location\, it is crucial to find an effective method for its identification. \nDirect current (DC) methods\, in particular ERT (Electric Resistivity Tomography)\, exploit the conductive and resistive properties of the materials\, permitting the identification of both the location of the highly resistive HDPE (High density polyethylene) membrane and the possible diffusion area of the pollutant\, which\, due to its high salt content\, is highly conductive.  A new mixed-dimensional Finite volume numerical model is developing for solving the forward and inverse problems in DC resistivity surveys. \nSpeaker’s bio \nLorenzo is a PhD Candidate in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (37° cycle) at Politecnico di Milano with an interdisciplinary scholarship between the Department of Civil and Envirnomental Engineering and the Department of Mathematics. Lorenzo has a Master of Science in Civil Engineering For Risk Mitigation obtained in 2019. In his free time\, Lorenzo loves playing football and doing trail running.

Gli eventi hanno lo scopo di fornire un luogo dove creare un network tra dottorandi ed entrare in contatto con i molti progetti sviluppati nel nostro dipartimento. \nLo speaker Stefano Conversi condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Integrating optical and radar imaging to enhance river drought monitoring”.  \nAl termine dell’evento sarà disponibile un piccolo rinfresco finanziato dal dipartimento. \nSarà possibile seguire la conferenza anche online al seguente link. \nAbstract \nDrought events are growingly affecting European and Italian territories\, hampering local environments and biodiversity\, such as the ones relying on rivers for their subsistence. Monitoring of rivers is becoming an important issue to face drought crisis and may be exploited with different tools. Among the most commons\, satellite imagery is exploited to map water coverage\, basing on optical or radar sources. This work proposes a combination of the two sensors to overcome possible limitations of the single dataset exploitation\, reaching a reliable result. The methodology is applied to a stretch of Po River in Lombardy region (Italy). Through Google Earth Engine platform\, optical satellite Sentinel-2 and radar satellite Sentinel-1 data are processed. The combination of the radar data and of the optical spectral indices is carried out through a pixel-based supervised classification\, with a Random Forest classifier. Maps of water coverage are obtained\, numerical outcomes of water surface evaluation are recorded and validated by the mean of reference hydrometric data. A multitemporal analysis is then reported\, aiming to prove the efficiency of the procedure. All iterations show reliable accuracies and correlation among water surface estimation and water table measurements in two sections of interest. In perspective\, the proposed methodology will be implemented in tools for supporting drought monitoring to be integrated in environmental public administration policies. \nSpeaker’s bio \nStefano is a PhD Student in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering\, within the Geodesy and Geomatics section. In 2021 he obtained the Master degree in Civil Engineering for Risk Mitigation at Politecnico di Milano. Currently he is part of the Innovazione project supported by Politecnico and Regione Lombardia\, for which he collaborates with the Operative Unit for management and preservation of Biodiversity.D Stefano likes to spend his free time travelling\, attending live concerts and baking.

SUMMARY:Exploiting computational models for (near) real-time landslide risk assessment
DESCRIPTION:Lunedì 11 marzo alle ore 12.00 presso l’Aula Grandori (Edificio 4 – p.za Leonardo da Vinci\, 32 – Milano) si terrà un seminario dal titolo: “Exploiting computational models for (near) real-time landslide risk assessment“\, tenuto dal Dr. sc. Anil Yildiz (Methods for Model-based Development in Computational Engineering\, RWTH Aachen University\, Aachen\, Germany). \nAbstract \nRisks due to single catastrophic landslide events or spatially concentrated shallow landslides on ecosystem\, infrastructure and human lives are increasing with higher number of events whether due to climate change or other anthropogenic activities. Model-based decision support in landslide risk assessment benefits from the high predictivity of complex computational models to provide decisions with less uncertainty and more reliability. While such models with high computational demand can be used in the production of susceptibility or hazard maps\, incorporation into near real-time applications\, such as early warning systems or automatically updated hazard maps\, is still a challenge. Replacing the computationally expensive model with a relatively cheap-to-built and nearly instantaneously predicting surrogate model is one solution of using complex models of geohazards in decision support. A strategy to exploit computational models for real-time landslide risk assessment will be presented in this talk with examples such as uncertainty quantification and parameter estimation. \nSpeaker’s bio \nAnil Yildiz is a senior research and deputy director of the Chair of Methods of Model-based Development in Computational Engineering\, RWTH Aachen University\, Germany\, and he is leading the research group Engineering Climate Change Response. He earned his BSc. and MSc. degrees in Civil Engineering at Bogazici University\, and obtained his Dr. sc. in Civil Engineering from ETH Zurich in 2018. He has been awarded the Culmann Prize 2019 for an outstanding thesis on the quantification of biological effects on soil stability. His research focusses mainly on geohazards\, covering a wide range of topics\, such as shallow landslides\, root reinforcement\, soil-plant-atmosphere interactions\, and methods\, such as complex laboratory and field testing as well as computational and surrogate modelling.

DESCRIPTION:Il prossimo appuntamento con la serie di incontri PhDTalks si terrà Martedì 19 marzo nell’aula Fassò (Edificio 4A)\, dalle 17:15 alle 18:30 CET. \nPhDTalks è una serie di seminari e discussioni tra dottorandi. Gli eventi hanno lo scopo di fornire un luogo dove creare un network tra dottorandi ed entrare in contatto con i molteplici progetti sviluppati nel nostro dipartimento. \nLo speaker Hasan Eslami condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Investigation of channel aggradation due to sediment overloading”.  \nAl termine dell’evento sarà disponibile un piccolo rinfresco finanziato dal dipartimento. \nSarà possibile seguire la conferenza anche online al seguente link. \nAbstract \nWhen a channel is overloaded with sediment\, an aggradation wave propagates with a certain celerity along the reach. Estimation of the local aggradation depth and of the celerity of propagation are important for hazard assessment and emergency planning. In the current project the aggradation process is studied using a variety of approaches to meet different objectives. First\, the celerity of propagation of aggradation wave is investigated by performing an appropriate experimental campaign. Furthermore\, considering that morphological processes are modeled by differential equations\, the eigenvalues of the latter’s system represent the celerity of propagation of small perturbations. With reference to the laboratory experiments with temporally and spatially detailed measurements\, our investigation shows how the celerity of propagation of aggradation wave and the eigenvalues correlate with one another\, while their values differ by orders of magnitude. Second\, the aggradation process studied experimentally are reproduced with corresponding numerical simulations in one-dimensional conditions\, demonstrating that the presence of sediment transport in a flow may result in an increase in the equivalent Manning’s coefficient. Third\, the aggradation process is also simulated using a linear diffusion equation. In this context\, an analytical solution for the diffusion equation is employed in the performed aggradation experiments\, revealing that a constant value for the diffusion coefficient is enough to reproduce the bed evolution within an experiment. \nSpeaker’s bio \nHasan completed his master’s degree in “Civil Engineering for Risk Mitigation” at Politecnico di Milano in 2021. He is currently pursuing his PhD program (37th cycle) at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. His research focuses on the ” Investigation of channel aggradation due to sediment overloading.”\nIn his leisure hours\, Hasan enjoys traveling and listening to music.

DESCRIPTION:Mercoledì 3 aprile dalle ore 9:30 alle 11:30 presso l’Aula Fassò (Edificio 4A – p.za Leonardo da Vinci\, 32 – Milano) si terrà un seminario dal titolo: “Biogas upgrading coupled with wastewater treatment in algal-bacterial photobioreactors“\, tenuto da María del Rosario Rodero (postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Sustainable Processes of the University of Valladolid\, Spain ). \nAbstract \nThe intensification of the symbiosis between microalgae and heterotrophic/chemoautotrophic bacteria in photobioreactors represents an innovative platform for the simultaneous removal of CO2 and H2S from biogas. In these systems\, microalgae use the light energy to fix the CO2 via photosynthesis with the subsequent generation of oxygen. This oxygen is used for the oxidation of H2S to sulfate. This biotechnology can also support the recovery of nutrients from wastewaters in the form of biomass\, which could be used as biofertilizer. This lecture aims at providing an overview of the latest advances made in the photosynthetic biogas upgrading field. Particular attention is devoted to summarizing the key operational and environmental parameters impacting the microalgae-based biogas upgrading. \nSpeaker’s bio \nMaría del Rosario Rodero is a postdoctoral researcher Margarita Salas at the Institute of Sustainable Processes of the University of Valladolid\, Spain. She is a member of the Young Water Professionals Spanish Chapter\, where she currently collaborates in the training area. María del Rosario Rodero studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Granada (Spain)\, and holds a PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from the University of Valladolid (Spain). She has received the “María Francisca García Usach” award from the DAM Chair for the Best Doctoral Thesis in Sustainable Management and Wastewater Resource Recovery in Spain. Her research mainly focuses on biological processes for converting waste gases\, such as biogas\, into value-added bioproducts.

DESCRIPTION:Mercoledì 10 aprile dalle ore 11:30 alle 12:30 presso l’Aula 3.1.9 (Edificio 3 – p.za Leonardo da Vinci\, 32 – Milano) si terrà un seminario dal titolo: “Il monitoraggio permanente con tomografia geoelettrica: uno strumento innovativo a supporto delle strategie di mitigazione del rischio idrogeologico”. \nIl seminario sarà tenuto da Azadeh Hojat Prof.ssa associata di Geofisica Applicata presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Mineraria della Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman (SBUK)\, Iran. \nSarà anche possibile seguire l’evento online via webex al seguente link. \nAbstract \nNegli ultimi anni\, la tomografia di resistività elettrica (Electrical Resistivity Tomography) utilizzata in modalità time-lapse con strumenti autonomi di nuova generazione sta emergendo come tecnologia efficace da integrare nelle strategie di mitigazione del rischio idrogeologico. Il contributo principale del metodo ERT time-lapse è la sua capacità di monitorare le variazioni di contenuto d’acqua nel sottosuolo e di rilevare i fenomeni di seepage. Il monitoraggio ERT permanente di sezioni critiche di frane\, dighe ed argini è una tecnologia recente ancora in fase di sviluppo. In questo seminario\, si discutono problematiche e soluzioni innovative sperimentate su alcuni casi studio. \nSpeaker’s bio \nAzadeh Hojat è professore associato di Geofisica Applicata presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Mineraria della Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman (SBUK)\, Iran. Ha conseguito la laurea in “Ingegneria mineraria – Esplorazione mineraria” presso la stessa università\, la laurea magistrale in “Geofisica – Geoelettrica” presso la Shahrood University of Technology ed il dottorato di ricerca in “Geofisica – Elettromagnetismo” presso la University of Teheran. Dal 2016 è visiting professor presso il Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) con incarichi didattici e collaborazioni di ricerca. Da diversi anni collabora anche con l’Università di Pisa\, dove dal 2022 fa parte del collegio dei docenti del Dottorato di ricerca in Geoscienze e Ambiente. \nPremiata dalla sua Università come Miglior membro della SBUK per le collaborazioni internazionali nel 2019 e come Migliore Professoressa della SBUK per le attività scientifiche (Premio Fakhereh Saba) nel 2022. Premiata nel 2019 per la migliore presentazione orale del 2nd Asia Pacific Meeting on Near Surface Geoscience & Engineering (Kuala Lumpur) organizzato dalla European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers. \nI suoi principali interessi di ricerca riguardano le applicazioni di tecniche geofisiche\, in particolare metodi ERT e GPR\, per risolvere diversi problemi ambientali e ingegneristici. Attualmente sta collaborando a diversi progetti nazionali e internazionali focalizzati sull’utilizzo del metodo ERT (per risolvere diversi problemi minerari\, rilevare strutture del sottosuolo\, in particolare qanat e cavità\, caratterizzare discariche e monitorare rischi idrogeologici) e del metodo GPR (a supporto di attività estrattive e controllo qualità del marmo\, come strumento per la diagnostica non distruttiva su edifici storici\, per la ricerca di cavità nel sottosuolo e per la mappatura dei sottoservizi e degli apparati radicali degli alberi).

Il seminario intitolato ‘Il nuovo paradigma di città sostenibile tra tutela del suolo e soluzioni “naturali” ‘ sarà trasmesso online via Webex previa iscrizione\, una volta registrati si riceverà via e-mail il link per seguire il seminario. \n\nForm d’iscrizione all’evento\n\nDescrizione attività\nDa sempre l’uomo affronta le sfide che gli vengono poste dall’ambiente in cui vive con soluzioni di tipo ingegneristico. Ad esempio: ci si difende dalle possibili alluvioni costruendo argini\, difese spondali o vasche di laminazione\, o dal caldo\, costruendo case dalle mura spesse e con “climatizzatori” di vario genere e la lista potrebbe essere molto lunga. Per quanto molte di queste soluzioni ingegneristiche sfruttino dei principi per i quali gli ambienti naturali sono stati di ispirazione\, la loro caratteristica è quella di prevedere la costruzione di strutture non naturali. Oggi sappiamo quanto sia importante mantenere delle porzioni di naturalità anche all’interno dell’ambiente costruito: sono le cosiddette Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) o soluzioni basate sulla natura. Il seminario illustrerà i principi delle NBS e fornirà degli esempi di applicazione nell’affrontare le principali sfide socio-ambientali del nostro tempo con particolare attenzione al tema della pianificazione urbana sostenibile e della tutela del suolo.

SUMMARY:Investigating nitrate losses and nitrous oxide emissions under varying water tables in artificially drained fields
DESCRIPTION:Venerdì 3 maggio alle ore 11:00 presso l’Aula Fassò (Edificio 4A – p.za Leonardo da Vinci\, 32 – Milano) si terrà un seminario dal titolo: “Investigating nitrate losses and nitrous oxide emissions under varying water tables in artificially drained fields“\, tenuto dal Dist.Prof. Chandra Madramootoo (Distinguished Professor at McGill University\, Montréal\, Canada). \nSpeaker’s bio \nBSc\, MSc and PhD in agricultural engineering at McGill University. Joined the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in 1984\, and was named to a James McGill Professorship in 2000. Created the Brace Centre for Water Resources Management in 1999\, and was its Founding Director. In this role\, he garnered funding for large scale\, multidisciplinary\, national and international water\, environmental\, and climate change projects. Areas of expertise include water management\, irrigation\, drainage\, agricultural research\, international agriculture development\, hydrology and water quality of surface and subsurface drained fields\, development of innovative technologies to predict crop water requirements\, and impacts of water management practices on greenhouse gas emissions. Has supervised over 80 graduate students\, authored or co-authored over 200 refereed journal papers\, and invited to deliver some 100 presentations at national and international conferences. \nAppointed Dean of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in 2005\, and over a 10 year period\, led a major transformation of the Faculty’s teaching and research programs. Introduced programs in global food security\, food safety\, integrated water resources management\, entrepreneurship and innovation. Led the academic renewal of the faculty\, and over 50% growth in the undergraduate and graduate student population. Teaching and research infrastructure were also upgraded.

DESCRIPTION:Partecipa martedì 7 Maggio\, dalle 17:30 alle 18:30\, al seminario condotto dal Prof. Alessandro Ceppi nell’ambito del Festival dello Sviluppo Sostenibile 2024. Il seminario intitolato ‘Meteorologia e Climatologia: Due Facce della stessa Medaglia‘ sarà trasmesso online via Webex previa iscrizione\, una volta registrati si riceverà via e-mail il link per seguire il seminario. \n\nForm d’iscrizione all’evento\n\nDescrizione attività\nSpesso meteorologia e climatologia vengono fraintese dai mezzi di comunicazione e dalla gente comune. Ben diverso è il significato di queste due discipline scientifiche: la prima si occupa da sempre di previsioni del tempo a breve e medio termine\, la seconda definisce\, sulla base di dati del passato\, le caratteristiche climatiche di un luogo.  Affronteremo questo viaggio\, partendo da un background storico fino ad arrivare ai nostri giorni: da come nascono le previsioni meteo ai cambiamenti climatici attuali. Inoltre\, l’utilizzo di una stazione meteorologica nell’attività didattica è uno strumento importantissimo affinché lo studente possa comprendere come si devono misurare correttamente le principali variabili atmosferiche affinché diano valori sensati. Gli obiettivi principali di questo seminario sono: capire l’importanza di una stazione meteorologica\, presentare una panoramica generale sulle variabili meteorologiche\, mostrare una guida al corretto posizionamento dei sensori che costituiscono una stazione meteo.

Il seminario intitolato ‘Terremoto e Patrimonio Costruito‘ sarà fruibile in presenza presso l’Aula 3.1.3 del Politecnico di Milano e online via Webex previa iscrizione\, una volta registrati si riceverà via e-mail il link per seguire il seminario. \n\nForm d’iscrizione all’evento\nIndirizzo aula 3.1.3 (Politecnico di Milano – Piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32 – Edificio 3 – Piano: Primo)\n\nDescrizione attività\nTERREMOTO E EDIFICI STORICI: il modulo didattico prevede due principali attività\, una seminariale e un’attività pratica\, volte all’approfondimento dei temi legati al fenomeno terremoto ed al suo effetto sulle strutture storiche in muratura. Attività 1 – seminario sui terremoti: cos’è un terremoto\, le onde sismiche\, l’effetto del terremoto sull’ambiente e sul costruito\, effetti di mitigazione\, storia e ricorrenza dei terremoti in Italia. Attività 2 – presentazione di un modello su tavola vibrante: l’effetto del sisma sugli edifici ed effetti di mitigazione; possono ancora essere sicuri gli edifici storici?
