SUMMARY:The role of Social Hotspot analysis in waste management: assessing sectoral social impacts for a better understanding of social risks
\nLo speaker Giuseppe Cecere condurrà un seminario dal titolo “The role of Social Hotspot analysis in waste management: assessing sectoral social impacts for a better understanding of social risks”.\nAl termine dell’evento sarà disponibile un piccolo rinfresco finanziato dal dipartimento. \nAbstract: \nSocial Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) is a methodology developed to assess the negative and positive social impacts of products and services\, along their life cycle. The new Guidelines for Social Life Cycle Assessment of Products together with the Methodological Sheets\, published in 2021 by the United Nations Environment Programme\, provide a roadmap to help stakeholders in the assessment of social impacts of products’ life cycles. However\, applications are hindered by the high sensitivity of the data under investigation and the relative novelty of the methodology. The Social Hotspot analysis allows\, as a preventive measure and through secondary data\, to identify the social issues that should be focused on during risk assessment. This type of analysis that allows the identification of the most sensitive themes can be used as a first step in the application of the S-LCA. In the waste sector\, the application of methodologies to assess social impacts could be particularly useful. Waste management facilities often suffer from strong protests both during construction and operation. Phenomena such as Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) syndrome and Locally Unwanted Land Use (LULU) are very common during the planning and implementation of this type of facilities. Most of these objections are often due to a bad communication approach on both sides and a denial of potential social and environmental impacts by plant operators. Using the Product Social Impact Life Cycle Assessment (PSILCA) database\, this study aims to identify the social hotspots that characterise the waste and wastewater management industry sector in the Italian context. In order to create a suitable reference scale\, the results for Italy were compared with the results of several European countries. The result is an industrial sector risk assessment\, calibrated on the European context\, which can be used as a first step in the evaluation of subcategories and indicators to be prioritised in the assessment of social impacts in the context of waste and wastewater management facilities. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nGiuseppe is a PhD Candidate in Environmental and Infrastracture Engineering (37° cycle) at Politecnico di Milano. Since 2020\, he has been working with the AWARE research group.  For his PhD project\, he is working on the application of Life Cycle Thinking methodologies to the waste management sector.  He holds a Master’s degree from the University of Padua and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Naples ‘Federico II’.

SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Timber for Hybrid Structures: an innovative perspective from numerical modeling to environmental assessment
\nLa speaker Laura Corti condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Timber for Hybrid Structures: an innovative perspective from numerical modeling to environmental assessment”. \nAbstract: \nIn the current context of climate change\, structural engineers struggle every day with an alarming fact: building sector contributes to 30% of global greenhouse emissions. One of the developing topic of research is characterised by bio-based structural materials\, in particular timber and engineered wood. Hybridisation of timber with other materials provides many advantages\, as better performances e.g. in case of seismic loads\, minor construction times and lower environmental impact. The topic of this talk focuses of some innovative research aspects of timber-hybrid structures\, first of all considering some numerical modeling benchmark analyses with issues specifically linked with timber orthotropy and contacts among other materials and secondly a comparative Life Cycle Assessment analysis where two equivalent buildings are compared and the role of connectors is highlighted. The perspective of this presentation suggests an overview of the interdisciplinarity of this topic\, where traditional structural problems are tackled together with sustainability issues. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nLaura graduated with a Master in Civil Engineering for Risk Mitigation (CERM) in Politecnico di Milano in 2021. She is currently enrolled in the second year of the PhD programme in Structural\, Seismic\, and Environmental Engineering (XXXVII cycle) at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Politecnico di Milano. She is involved in the modeling\, testing and development of timber-concrete hybrid composites\, with a special focus on sustainability. In the free time Laura enjoys going to the theater\, hiking and swimming.

SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Numerical simulation of 3D Concrete Printing: challenges and opportunities
\nLo speaker Giacomo Rizzieri condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Numerical simulation of 3D Concrete Printing: challenges and opportunities”. \nAbstract: \n3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) is rapidly gaining momentum in the building industry\, as it could be the way to achieve a fully automatized and more sustainable construction process. However\, before a large-scale adoption of this technology takes place\, it is necessary to address some issues both at the practical and numerical levels. The development of reliable computational tools would provide a better understanding of the printing process\, while also enabling the prediction\, in a design framework\, of its outcomes. In this talk\, it is presented a numerical model to simulate the extrusion and layer deposition phases of cementitious materials. The model assimilates fresh concrete to a homogeneous weakly-compressible fluid and solves the Navier-Stokes equations in a Lagrangian framework with the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM). Different numerical challenges will be addressed regarding the imposition of time-dependent moving boundary conditions\, the accurate treatment of inter-layer contact and the reduction of the computational cost. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nGiacomo is a PhD Candidate in Structural\, Seismic and Geotechnical Engineering (37° cycle) at Politecnico di Milano. He has a Master of Science in Structural Engineering obtained in 2021 at Politecnico di Milano. Currently\, he is in the second year of his PhD and he is involved in the development of new computational tools to simulate 3D Concrete Printing. In his free time Giacomo enjoys hiking\, reading and watercolor painting.

DESCRIPTION:Giovedì 25 Maggio si svolgerà presso l’aula B.6.1 (Edificio 14 – Nave\, piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32) \, un seminario dal titolo “2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquake: Overview of One of the Deadliest Seismic Event in History” tenuto da Giulia Jole Sechi\, dottoranda in “role of digital technology in informal settlements construction” presso l’Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (Barcelona). \nAbstract \nA devastating earthquake of 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Southern Türkiye in the early hours of 6 February with its epicenter. The earthquake affected an area approximately 500km long\, where almost 16 million people reside including about 1.8 million Syrian refugees. A second major earthquake hit the region after 9 hours with 7.5 magnitude\, causing further destruction of damaged buildings. Approximately 2.4 million people are currently living in temporary shelters\, the victims are more than 50\,000. We will present a gallery of photos and videos from the field whose aim is to outline the main damage types and structural failures observed. We will also outline the damage and repair methodology that is being implemented by the local government\, international organisations and Miyamoto International to accelerate the return home of internally displaced people. \nSpeaker’s biosketch \nGiulia Jole Sechi graduated in 2013 in civil structural engineering from Politecnico di Milano with a thesis partially written in Peru on earth dwellings reinforced with used car tyre straps. She then lived two years in Chad and three years in New Zealand\, where she worked on the 2010-2011 Christchurch and 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes. Giulia also worked in Nepal with UNDP for the 2015 Gorkha earthquake\, before going to Tanzania and India. She has worked as structural engineering consultant for Miyamoto International on the 2021 Haiti earthquake response and is now Corporate Structural Engineer at Miyamoto International. As part of her job she has been deployed in Turkey right after the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake. She is also currently pursuing her PhD on the role of digital technology in informal settlements construction at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya\, Barcelona.

SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Acceleration of high-resolution simulations of pollutants dispersion in atmosphere performed with a Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Model
\nLa speaker Daniela Barbero condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Acceleration of high-resolution simulations of pollutants dispersion in atmosphere performed with a Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Model”. \nAbstract: \nAtmospheric dispersion modelling is becoming increasingly important for the air quality assessment of urban environments\, especially in residential areas\, for regulatory purposes and to project pollution control strategies. Estimating urban air quality is challenging\, because of the intrinsic characteristics of cities atmospheric structure\, such as high density of primary emissions and presence of local dispersion processes\, that produce strong concentration gradients. Therefore\, very high spatial resolution simulations may often be required to improve the accuracy of estimations. Consequently\, the use of microscale atmospheric dispersion models in long-term studies and forecasting systems is growing. However\, this modelling can be ambitious because of the amount of time and CPU required for the simulations\, especially if the computational domain has a significant extension. \nThis work presents the use of kernel method as alternative to the common box-counting method to compute concentration inside the microscale Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Model PSPRAY. The kernel method allows a reduction of computational particles emitted during the simulation; it enables therefore to optimize the overall computational costs of the simulation\, ensuring at the same time results with an accuracy similar to that of box counting method. \nThe method has been tested to compute hourly ground concentration and deposition fields of gaseous and particulate pollutants emitted by point and linear sources\, evaluated both inside a domain divided in tiles and inside a nested domains configuration. The implementation inside PSPRAY has made possible to reduce the computational time of a simulation from 70% to 80%. Therefore\, it led to an enhancement of the efficiency of model and to a widening of its application field. \nThe PSPRAY model\, optimized with the kernel method\, has been already extensively applied to evaluate the impact of road emissions in the city of Rome\, in the frame of Italian research project BEEP (Big data in Environmental and occupational Epidemiology). This implementation allowed to perform a microscale simulation over the city\, considering a 12×12 km2 domain with a horizontal resolution of 4 m and producing hourly ground concentration fields of the pollutants for an entire year\, obtaining an average computational time of 3 hours per simulated day on an HPC (High Performance Computing) system with 180 cores. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nDaniela is a candidate of an Executive PhD in Environmental Engineering and Infrastructure (35° cycle) at Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with ARIANET s.r.l.\, of which she has been an employee since 2019\, after obtaining a Master of Science in Environmental And Land Planning Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. \nARIANET is an Italian consultant company in the field of atmospheric environment and Daniela is involved both in carrying out atmospheric impact studies and in the development of the used models\, in particular Lagrangian Particle Dispersion models. \nIn her free time\, Daniela enjoys reading books and travelling.

SUMMARY:TIM approach: a thermodynamic standpoint for nonlinear soil-structure interaction
\nAbstract: \nThe frequency- and amplitude-dependant effects of soil-structure interaction under seismic conditions tend to be oversimplified in design and are commonly roughly modelled in large-scale assessment of structures\, with occurrence of unrealistic predictions of the ductility and displacement demands for the structural members. This seminar explores an analysis approach to account for salient features controlling the dynamic response of soil-structure systems\, overcoming limitations of existing practice-oriented methodologies and providing an essential description of reality. It consists of a class of Thermodynamic Inertial Macroelements (TIMs) simulating the macroscopic response of geotechnical systems in the nonlinear analysis of structures. TIMs reproduce a combined nonlinear and inertial response under multiaxial conditions of different foundation types\, including abutments\, shallow and deep foundations. The hardening response is derived within a consistent thermodynamic approach\, using hyper-plasticity\, and is bounded by the ultimate capacity of the geotechnical system. Inertial effects developing in a geotechnical system under dynamic loading are simulated through appropriate participating masses. TIMs are implemented as a new class of multiaxial materials in OpenSees. Applications of the proposed approach are discussed\, from the seismic analysis of peculiar soil-structure layouts to the large-scale assessment of infrastructural systems. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nDavide Noè Gorini is a post-doc at Sapienza University of Rome. He graduated in Civil Engineering in 2015 at Sapienza University of Rome\, where also obtained a PhD in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering in 2019\, working on a soil-abutment microelement representation for seismic assessment of bridges. He privileges open-source numerical environments for sharing knowledge without barriers\, such as OpenSees and open supercomputing resources. His current reseach fields concern: development of a thermodynamic inertial macroelement approach for soil-structure interaction; seismic performance of bridges\, buildings and tunnels; computational tools for soil-structure interaction applications in OpenSees; analysis and design of dissipative foundations and seismic-protection solutions; constitutive modelling for geomaterials and seismic assessment of natural slopes.

SUMMARY:Silicon based micromechanical actuators
DESCRIPTION:Lunedì 12 Giugno si svolgerà presso l’aula Beltrami (Edificio 5 – piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32) \, un seminario dal titolo “Silicon based micromechanical actuators” tenuto da Harald Schenk\, Professore presso il Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems della Brandenburg Technical University (Germania). \nAbstract \nFraunhofer IPMS is a leading research and development institute in the field of micromechanical sensors\, & actuators\, and systems based on them. The most important fields of application are smart industrial solutions\, mobility\, and medical & health. The presentation starts with a brief introduction of the institute and then turns to the field of micromechanical actuators. Three different classes of electrostatic microactuators based on silicon are currently investigated and developed at IPMS. The first class are comb actuators\, which are used for driving of scanning mirrors for 1D and 2D light deflection. Typical application examples are LIDAR systems for autonomous vehicles. The second class are highly integrable actuators used for micromirror arrays with a million addressable single mirrors per chip. These arrays are deployed\, among other applications\, in microlithography as programmable mask. In a current research project\, they are also being further developed for use in holographic displays. The third class of electrostatic actuators presented in the talk are novel bending actuators that achieve high deflections at small electrical voltages. They form the basis for micropositioning systems with a displacement of several hundred micrometers but also of novel micro loudspeakers and ultrasonic transducers.

SUMMARY:Locally resonant vibro-acoustic metamaterials as NVH solutions – applications by KU Leuven
DESCRIPTION:Lunedì 12 Giugno si svolgerà presso l’aula Beltrami (Edificio 5 – piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32) \, un seminario dal titolo “Locally resonant vibro-acoustic metamaterials as NVH solutions – applications by KU Leuven” tenuto da Elke Deckers\, Assistant Professor presso la KU Leuven Faculty of Engineering Technology (Belgio). \nAbstract  \nLightweight materials and designs have been largely used in a variety of engineering applications due to the increasingly stringent ecological as well as economical requirements. However\, lightweight structures typically combine low mass with high stiffness\, which in turn leads to an impaired Noise\, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) insulation performance. Classical solutions to improve the vibro-acoustic performance of systems often involve the addition of mass or volume\, which conflicts with the current trends towards lightweight designs. Locally resonant metamaterials (LRMs) have recently emerged and shown potential in the field of noise control engineering\, allowing lightweight designs while achieving a superior noise and vibration insulation performance in tunable frequency ranges\, referred to as stop bands\, which are frequency zones where free wave propagation is inhibited.\nThis presentation explains the basic concepts of locally resonant vibro-acoustic materials and shows the potential of this type of solution for noise and vibration mitigation applied to industrial automotive and aerospace relevant problems\, where different production processes and materials are used. \nSpeaker’s biosketch \nElke Deckers received her MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering from KU Leuven in June 2008. During her PhD studies at the same university\, she developed an alternative prediction method for mid-frequency vibro-acoustic analysis including poro-elastic materials. She received her PhD in December 2012 with a thesis entitled “A wave based approach for steady-state Biot models of poroelastic materials”. Holding a postdoctoral research grant of the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO)\, she extended her research field to the numerical and analytical modelling of complex lightweight material systems\, including viscous materials\, metamaterials and meta-porous systems\, and the development of supporting fast numerical prediction techniques. She did a research stay at Cambridge University and a short research stay at LAUM. SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Assessment and retrofitting of deep foundations of existing bridges
\nLo speaker Matteo Corigliano condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Assessment and retrofitting of deep foundations of existing bridges”. \nAbstract: \nMost of the infrastructures in Europe are approaching their design life and\, therefore\, their safety has to be reassessed according to the more severe design standards.  Nowadays the foundations of existing bridges are verified using models based on simplified assumptions\, which make the retrofitting measures often unsustainable. \nThe ultimate goal of the research is the introduction of a tool\, allowing a rapid and reliable evaluation of the foundation performance and providing hints for the most rational retrofitting. To this aim\, the results of finite element numerical analyses on a real case study have been theoretically interpreted\, obtaining significant insight in the mechanical response of pile groups. The innovative tool under development will lead to a more aware and sustainable design of bridge foundations retrofitting measures. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nMatteo is PhD candidate in Structural Seismic and Geotechnical Engineering and has a Master degree in Civil Engineering – Geotechnics.\nHis mainreserach interest is the interaction between soil and critical infrastructures (bridges\, emnbankments and tunnels).\nHe is now focused on the assessment and retrofitting of deep foundations of existing bridges.\nHe spends his free time playing tennis\, skiing and honing his photography skills.

SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Effects of stimulated autogenous self-healing of Ultra High-Performance Concrete slabs under repeated impact loading
\nLo speaker Niranjan Prabhu Kannikachalam condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Effects of stimulated autogenous self-healing of Ultra High-Performance Concrete slabs under repeated impact loading”. \nAbstract:  \nThis paper reports on an experimental investigation on the self-healing capabilities of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) subjected to a drop-weight test. The impactor weight was 10 kg\, dropped from the height of 1 m on the center of the specimen with dimensions 29 x 29 x 4 cm3 (± 1 cm)\, with fixed corners and a continuous bottom support near the edges. Two types of self-healing were studied: stimulated autogenous self-healing with crystalline admixtures and autonomous self-healing with macro-capsules containing polyurethane. To pre-crack the specimens\, a repeated impact was performed on the same specimen. The different healing conditions for autogenous self-healing were submersion\, wet/dry cycling in water\, or in saline solution (12 hours wet/12 hours dry)\, and exposure to an environment with 95±5% RH. The self-healing evaluation was made using natural frequency analysis\, microscopic crack closure monitoring\, and laser measurements of the ductility. The test moments were at impact testing\, and after 1 month\, 2 months\, and 4 months. The rebound height of the impactor and the crack formation during a drop weight test were analyzed using a high-speed camera and Digital Image Correlation. At the end of the healing period\, all the specimens were tested to failure and the improvement of impact resistance due to self-healing was evaluated. Based on the natural frequency analysis and surface crack closure\, the healing efficiency for autogenous self-healing increased for samples stored at 95±5% RH\, in wet/dry cycling\, and submerged. In comparison\, autonomous self-healing specimens were tested to failure on the same day\, an hour after pre-cracking. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nNiranjan Prabhu\, an enthusiastic and committed Ph.D. student\, is dedicated to exploring the characterization of self-healing concrete performance in extreme loading scenarios. He is currently enrolled in the joint doctoral program at Politecnico di Milano (36th cycle) and Ghent University\, where he is also a valued researcher in the Self-healing concrete group of the Smartincs network. Niranjan’s primary objective is to contribute significantly to the field through his research endeavors. In addition to his research pursuits\, Niranjan actively participates in scholarly discussions\, attends conferences\, and collaborates closely with fellow researchers\, fostering a dynamic academic community.

SUMMARY:Tough Architected Concrete Enabled by Robotic Manufacturing and Bio-inspired Schemes
DESCRIPTION:Venerdì 30 Giugno si svolgerà presso l’aula Beltrami (Edificio 5 – piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32) \, un seminario dal titolo “Tough Architected Concrete Enabled by Robotic Manufacturing and Bio-inspired Schemes” tenuto da Reza Moini\, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering presso l’università di Princeton (New Jersey\, USA). \nAbstract \nIn the face of climate changes\, the world’s growing population\, and decaying infrastructure\, there is a need to develop stronger\, tougher\, and more resilient civil infrastructure materials. Nature offers abundant relevant insight for developing resilient engineering materials. Two primary challenges are engineering the mechanics of strong and tough design motifs found in biological materials and implementing their fabrication via advancing manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing techniques.  This seminar presents a bio-inspired approach for the purposeful design of architected cement-based materials. Construction materials typically suffer from a brittle response and low fracture toughness compared to other ceramic counterparts. Here\, we propose engineering several toughening mechanisms informed by nature\, into the conventionally brittle construction materials (such as concrete) with a quasi-brittle and ductile response and significantly enhanced toughness property. These designs are enabled by a variety of manufacturing techniques\, including additive processes. Layer-by-layer additive manufacturing commonly leads to processing-induced weak interfaces. By harnessing the weak characteristics of the interfaces and materials architecture\, we engineer the ability for damage delocalization in the material. This seminar makes the case that additive manufacturing offers the opportunity to harness the role of heterogeneous interfaces\, in favor of materials’ mechanical properties. Development of non-conventional automated technologies such as robotic additive manufacturing processes across multiple scales will be presented as the necessary tools to achieve such resilient infrastructure materials. \nSpeaker’s biosketch \nReza Moini joined the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Princeton University as an assistant professor in January 2021. He is directing the Architected Materials and Additive Manufacturing (AM2) Lab at Princeton and is an associated faculty with the Institute of Materials as well as the Andlinger Center of Energy and Environment. Moini completed his Ph.D. in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University in 2020. \nHis current research focuses on understanding the mechanics of architected and functional civil engineering materials with toughening mechanisms inspired by natural material\, and developing new processing techniques that enable them. His work is motivated by the intellectual challenges in mechanics of intrinsically brittle materials and designing tough and flaw-tolerant materials without changing the materials’ composition. \n  \n

SUMMARY:PhDTalks | Hazard and risk assessment in urban areas based on 3D Phisics-Based ground shaking scenarios
\nLa speaker Jiayue Lin condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Hazard and risk assessment in urban areas based on 3D Phisics-Based ground shaking scenarios”. \nAbstract: \nWith the growth of global urban population and the concentration of economic activities in cities\, the analysis of the impact of devastating earthquakes plays a crucial role in disaster risk reduction in large urban areas. Earthquake ground motion models are a key component in the chain for seismic risk assessment\, both within probabilistic and deterministic frameworks\, providing estimates of the probability distribution of ground motion intensity measures as a function of explanatory variables\, such as magnitude\, distance\, and site conditions. Standard empirical approaches\, i.e. Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs)\, are routinely used in engineering practice but suffer from some\nintrinsic drawbacks\, such as: (i) they are poorly calibrated in the near-source region of strong earthquakes; (ii) they cannot account for complex\, site-specific\, geological conditions; (iii) they do not provide a detailed and region-specific description of spatial variability of ground motion; (iv) they provide only peak values of ground motion without the full waveforms which may be used in dynamic\nanalyses of structures.\n3D physics-based numerical simulations (PBS) of seismic ground motion\, which reflect the physics of the whole seismic wave propagation problem\, from the seismic source\, through the propagation path\, up to the local site response\, have emerged as a promising tool\, complementary to GMPEs\, for predicting earthquake ground motion and its spatial variability during realistic earthquakes. In this\ncontext\, the main goal of this PhD thesis is to explore the use of 3D PBS (by the computer code SPEED\, http://speed.mox.polimi.it/ ) in seismic risk assessment at urban scale\, by coupling an advanced characterization of ground motion and of this spatial variability with state-of-the-art\nvulnerability and fragility models\, with application to the case study of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nJiayue Lin is a PhD student at Politecnico di Milano within the H2020-Marie-Curie Project\, and she has been working on different aspects related to the incorporation of ground shaking scenarios from physics-based numerical simulations in seismic risk models\, with application to the Thessaloniki case study. \nJiayue is simply loving her life with respecting her inner voice\, and at this present\, she is missing Traditional Chinese Calligraphy very much\, which is her habit that she enjoyed when she was in China.

SUMMARY:A tale of two complementary paradigms for urban water sustainability: A computational fluid dynamics machine learning model of water treatment optimization versus urban recovery/reuse in the circular economy
DESCRIPTION:Mercoledì 12 Luglio si svolgerà presso l’aula T.0.4 (Edificio 13 – Via Bonardi)\, un seminario dal titolo “A tale of two complementary paradigms for urban water sustainability: A computational fluid dynamics machine learning model of water treatment optimization versus urban recovery/reuse in the circular economy” tenuto da John J. Sansalone\, Professore di Ingegneria presso la University of Florida (USA). \nAbstract \n\n\nThe built environs have evolved with a focus on individual motor vehicle transport\, imperviousness that yield climate change impacts\, and results in a degraded urban water cycle.  This evolution is no longer sustainable and results\, in part\, in a human condition of chronic health dysregulation from anthropogenic chemical and particulate matter (PM) exposure and a lack of human physical activity.  Focusing on the sustainability of urban water\, a plethora of tools/techniques are available to facilitate urban water sustainability.  This seminar contrasts two tools/techniques: (a)  A state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled machine learning (ML) modeling platform (CFD-ML) developed from physical model data and CFD simulations over a wide range of urban drainage clarification configurations\, loadings\, hydrodynamics\, urban PM granulometry and PM-partitioned chemicals versus (b) Recovery/reuse of PM and PM-partitioned chemicals by maintenance operations that has historical roots in Italy that encompass hundreds of years.  The modern incentive to recovery/reuse is the promulgation of load credits (PM\, chemicals) as an alternative to structural best management practices (BMPs) in urban areas\, in particular with urban infrastructure adjacency conflicts.  The benefits of CFD-ML is optimization of treatment systems\, in particular\, with constrained volume/surface area as well as treatment optimization of systems designed for flood control\, a perennial challenge in Italy and all urbanized countries.  The liability of residence time (RT) guidance is shown for PM and chemical load management as well as the economic unsustainability of such guidance.  The benefits of urban reuse/recovery of PM and chemical loads in a circular economy are demonstrated as well as a methodology used to provide load credits for such near source control practices.  The parallel benefit to such frequent urban reuse/recovery of PM\, chemical\, trash (plastics\, EDCs\, PFAS …) loads is the reduction of ecological (including human) exposure to chronic toxins in aqueous and atmospheric environs.

SUMMARY:Shape Memory Alloy (SMA)-based Seismically Resilient Civil Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Martedì 18 Luglio si svolgerà presso l’Aula Magna (Edificio 1 – piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32) \, un seminario dal titolo “Shape Memory Alloy (SMA)-based Seismically Resilient Civil Infrastructure” tenuto da Shahria Alam\, Professore di Ingegneria Civile presso l’University of British Columbia (UBC). \nAbstract \nShape memory alloy (SMA) is a special kind of material that can undergo large deformations and return to its undeformed shape through stress removal (superelasticity) or heating (shape memory effect). Its distinct thermomechanical properties and flag-shaped hysteresis make SMA an ideal contender for the development of various novel and resilient structural components against seismic hazards. Different types of SMAs are available in the market (e.g.\, Ni-Ti\, Cu- and Fe-based SMAs) in various forms (e.g.\, wires\, round bars\, plates\, cables\, etc). This presentation will review selected past efforts that have contributed to the enhancement of seismic resilience for buildings and bridges by utilizing SMAs in beam-column connections\, bracings\, dampers/isolators\, etc\, and outline some of the technical and non-technical issues that need to be addressed in the future. Although the high cost of SMAs is still limiting their wide use\, research investigating their production and processing will make them more cost-competitive. It is expected that SMAs will emerge as an essential material in the construction industry in the near future to build more resilient civil infrastructure. \nSpeaker’s biosketch \nDr. Shahria Alam is a Professor of Civil Engineering and the Tier 1 Principal’s Research Chair in Resilient & Green Infrastructure in the School of Engineering at The University of British Columbia (UBC)’s Okanagan campus. He is serving as the Director of the Green Construction Research & Training Center (GCRTC) at UBC. Dr. Alam is the Vice President (Technical Programs) of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE). Previously\, he served as the Chair of the Engineering Mechanics and Materials Division of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) from 2017 to 2023. He received his PhD in Civil/Structural Engineering from Western University in 2008. His research interests include smart and recycled materials and their structural engineering applications. He has published about 400 peer-reviewed articles in these areas. He is the recipient of many national and international awards including three best paper awards. Dr. Alam serves as an Associate Editor of ASCE’s Journal of Bridge Engineering and Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering\, and Engineering Structures of Elsevier. He is also serving in various code committees and currently serving as the Chair of the ASCE-ACI 441 Reinforced Concrete Column Committee.

Therefore\, the engineering geology research group of Politecnico di Milano has recently developed a new sediment erosion and transport model\, called SMART-SED.\nThe advantages of SMART-SED with respect to other similar models are the automatic detection of the drainage zones\, the statistical downscaling of soil granulometry input maps and the evaluation of the factor of safety at catchment scale. Moreover\, the input data required are few and they are usually open data.\nAfter studies on sediment transport on a mountain catchment located near the Lecco campus of Politecnico\, the model was successfully calibrated and validated\, given the availability of field data over time. Then\, different applications were successfully tested\, as the dam filling evaluation in catchments characterized by different bedrocks in the Italian Alps and in the Apennines. In addition\, the back-analysis of some well-known Italian floods and debris flows events was accomplished\, considering as input the relative rainfall data\, and a simulation of a climate change scenario from the General Circulation Model was performed to understand possible future hazard scenarios.\nA general good performance of the model was observed also for the identification of the unstable slopes and of the flooded areas\, based on comparison with the Italian landslides inventory and with Sentinel Hub maps. Finally\, the simulation of the climate change scenario show an increase of the magnitude of solid and water discharge that has to be taken into account for the adaptation of the actual rainfall thresholds to the future rainfall regimes.\nThe proof of the reliability of SMART-SED results is considered important for the development of a complete hydrological model that can represent an innovative tool for urban planning and risk mitigation in a climate change scenario. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nMonica graduated in Geological Sciences and Technologies at University of Milano-Bicocca in 2019. She has collaborated with Politecnico di Milano working on topics related to engineering geology since 2019\, and she is currently enrolled in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering PhD program (37° cycle) at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Politecnico di Milano. Her research deals with shallow processes related to sediment erosion and transport. \nIn her free time\, Monica enjoys hiking and travelling.

SUMMARY:Genomics-Driven Solutions: Harnessing the Power of Genomic Science for Controlling Antimicrobial Resistance and Infectious Diseases in Applied Engineering and Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Martedì 26 settembre dalle ore 10.00 alle ore 11.00 presso l’Aula Magna (Edificio 1 – p.za Leonardo da Vinci\, 32 – Milano) si terrà un seminario dal titolo: “Genomics-Driven Solutions: Harnessing the Power of Genomic Science for Controlling Antimicrobial Resistance and Infectious Diseases in Applied Engineering and Architecture“\, tenuto dalla Dott.ssa Elita Jauneikaite (Imperial College of London\, UK). \nAbstract \nNearly a century after the discovery of penicillin heralded the beginning of the antibiotic era\, which has been associated with unparalleled improvements in human health and reductions in mortality associated with infection\, the dwindling pipeline for new antibiotic classes coupled with the inevitable spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) pose a major global challenge. Historically\, surveillance of AMR bacteria typically relied on phenotypic analysis of isolates taken from infected individuals\, which provides only a low-resolution view of the epidemiology behind an individual infection or wider outbreak. Recent years have seen increasing adoption of powerful new genomic technologies that have the potential to revolutionise AMR surveillance by provide a high-resolution picture of AMR profile of the bacteria causing infections and provide real-time actionable information for treating and preventing infections. With current DNA sequencing technologies and turnaround times\, outbreak investigation and providing support for IPC is the best use of genomics for AMR surveillance in healthcare facilities. \nI will share examples of my work on applying bacterial genomics to better understand disease-causing bacterial infections and antimicrobial resistance patterns by analysing large-scale datasets and how application of DNA sequencing technologies to investigate hospital clusters of bacterial isolates with unusual antimicrobial activity transforms our epidemiological understanding of such hospital clusters and provides novel insights into resistance vectors. \nSpeaker’s bio \nDr Elita Jauneikaite is an Advanced Research Fellow in Bacterial Genomics and Epidemiology at the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Imperial College London. She completed her PhD at the University of Southampton and the Genome Institute of Singapore before moving to Imperial College as a postdoctoral researcher and then a Research Fellow. Currently\, Dr Jauneikaite is the Research Lead for the Priority Pathogens theme at the National Institute of Health Research Health Protection Research Unit in Healthcare Associated Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance at Imperial College London. \nElita’s research focuses on evolution\, transmission and antimicrobial resistance of vaccine preventable\, and healthcare associated bacterial infections. As her major research programme\, Elita is investigating the disease-causing Group B Streptococcus (GBS) using large-scale genomic epidemiology in both high- and low-income country settings\, bioinformatic analyses and molecular biology techniques to inform on evolution\, mother-to-baby transmission\, and emergence of antimicrobial resistance patterns of this pathogen. As Research Lead for Priority Pathogens\, Elita leads genomics work investigating healthcare associated infections\, as well as outbreaks and pathogenicity of a range of bacterial pathogens including E. coli\, K. pneumoniae\, carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales\, staphylococcal and streptococcal species. \nElita co-led the recent Surveillance and Epidemiology of Drug Resistant Infections (SEDRIC) genomic surveillance of AMR working group and is an active member of the JPIAMR B2B2B-AMRdx network. In 2022\, Elita was recognised as an Emerging Leader in International Infectious Diseases by International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) and selected as a participant in the European Talent Academy 2023.

SUMMARY:Uncertainty and Decision-making: Philosophical instruments at the service of Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Giovedì 28 settembre dalle ore 12.30 alle ore 13.30 presso l’Aula Fassò (Edificio 4A – p.za Leonardo da Vinci\, 32 – Milano) si terrà un seminario dal titolo: “Uncertainty and Decision-making: Philosophical instruments at the service of Engineering“\, tenuto da Malvina Ongaro (Politecnico di Milano – DICA). \nSarà anche possibile seguire l’evento online da WebEx. \nAbstract \nUncertainty is a central concept in everyday life and in most academic disciplines. In Engineering\, virtually any modelling or planning has to face uncertainty of different types and varying degrees of severity. How do we make choices under all this uncertainty\, and how should we make them? Analyses coming from theoretical research on the concept of uncertainty and on different approaches in decision-making may provide valuable tools for applied work in many areas of Engineering. \nSpeaker’s bio \nMalvina Ongaro is a postdoc researcher at Politecnico di Milano. She obtained her PhD in Philosophy from the Università del Piemonte Orientale\, where she worked mainly in decision theory and philosophy of economics. She holds a MSc in philosophy of science from the London School of Economics and has held visiting positions at the TINT Centre for Philosophy of Social Science in Helsinki and at the Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics in Rotterdam. Her current interests include natural risks\, cost-benefit analysis\, and multi-criteria decision-making. \n

SUMMARY:Bio e-methane from CO2 and green H2
\nLa speaker Anna Santus condurrà un seminario dal titolo “Bio e-methane from CO2 and green H2”. \nAbstract \nClimate change will have negative effects on human health\, economics\, the environment\, flora and fauna presence on the planet. For these reasons\, the necessity to find and use renewable energy sources\, such as bio e-methane\, is compelling. Bio e-methane can be generated by reducing carbon dioxide (CO2)\, a well-known greenhouse gas\, and green hydrogen (H2)\, through a biological process mediated by hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Archaea). The bio e-methane generated can be directly injected in the national natural gas grid and/or it can be used as a fuel in the transportation sector. During the PhD project\, both experimental and modelling activities of this biological process have been conducted. Experimental analysis\, carried out in batch and continuous operation\, have allowed to identify the microorganisms maximum velocity\, the optimal reactor configuration and also inhibition factors/nutrients deficiency. Modelling activities have validated experimental data collected and\, helped understanding physical aspect of gas-liquid mass of H2. Some noteworthy results achieved include: i) cultivation of hydrogenotrophic methanogens; ii) the development of a method for measuring the specific velocity of microorganisms (SHMA); iii) implementation of a model for the biological process. Looking ahead\, further insights into H2 gas-liquid mass transfer are needed to optimize the process\, as it remains a key aspect of this biological process. \nSpeaker’s bio \nAnna is a PhD student in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (36th cycle) at Politecnico di Milano. She has a Master of Science in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering obtained in 2019 at Politecnico di Milano. Her research activities are focused on anaerobic digestion processes and biological biogas upgrading. In her free time\, Anna loves playing soccer and hiking.
